Chapter 25

882 Words
The morning came slowly. I woke up to the sound of Devon’s steady breathing beside me. His arm was heavy across my waist, holding me like even in his sleep he refused to let me go. For a moment I just lay there, staring at his face. He looked younger when he slept, almost peaceful, and I smiled without meaning to. I stretched a little and that was enough to wake him. His eyes opened, still hazy from sleep, but when he saw me a small smile tugged at his lips. “Good morning, baby,” he murmured, his voice rough and deep. “Morning,” I whispered back, embarrassed by how warm my cheeks felt. He leaned closer and kissed me lazily, like he had no intention of letting me get up any time soon. I laughed against his mouth and tried to push him away. “We can’t stay in bed all day.” “Why not?” he asked, kissing my cheek, my jaw, anywhere he could reach while I tried to wriggle free. “The pack can survive a few hours without us.” I finally slipped out of his hold, and he groaned dramatically, rolling onto his back. I giggled as I pulled the blanket off him just to annoy him. “Come on, Alpha, even leaders have to eat breakfast.” That was when there was a knock at the door. Joey’s voice came through, muffled but playful. “If you two are done pretending you don’t hear me, there’s food out here. And before you roll your eyes, Alpha, yes, I made sure no one else saw me bring it.” Devon let out a growl that only made me laugh harder. I opened the door and found the tray sitting there with eggs, toast, and fruit. Joey was already gone, but I could almost hear her laughing to herself. We ate together in bed, stealing bites from each other like children. Devon fed me a piece of toast, and when I leaned forward to take it, he pulled his hand back so I had to chase him. I smacked his chest and he only grinned, his eyes glowing with amusement. When we finally finished, I stretched out beside him again. For the first time in what felt like forever, my chest wasn’t heavy. I almost felt normal, like I belonged here. “You’re smiling again,” Devon said softly, brushing his fingers along my hair. “Am I?” I asked, trying not to blush. “Yes,” he said, leaning down to kiss my forehead. “I’ll do anything to keep it that way.” The words should have filled me with joy, and they did, but something inside me still whispered that happiness like this doesn’t last for me. I pushed the thought down and focused on the warmth of his arms. Later, when we finally left the room, the pack house was buzzing with life. Wolves greeted Devon with bows and nods. Some of them looked at me too, their eyes softer than before. It was strange not to feel all their judgment pressing down on me. But not everyone was welcoming. Levi stood by the staircase, his arms crossed, his eyes sharp on me. He didn’t say a word, but the way he looked at me made my stomach twist. Devon must have noticed because his hand tightened on mine as he led me past. He didn’t acknowledge Levi, and I forced myself not to look back. Still, I could feel his eyes burning into me until we turned the corner. Joey caught up with us a little later, her usual grin in place. “You two look suspiciously well rested,” she teased, raising her brows. I rolled my eyes, but Devon only smirked. “Suspiciously?” “Yes,” she said, narrowing her eyes at him. “Too much smiling for one morning. I’m keeping an eye on you both.” Her laughter was contagious, and I found myself laughing too. For once, it felt good to just be surrounded by people who cared, even if one of them couldn’t resist teasing us. The rest of the day passed quietly. Devon handled pack matters, but he kept pulling me aside every chance he got, stealing small kisses when no one was looking. By the time the sun began to set, my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. We ended the day sitting on the balcony outside our room. The sky was painted in colors of fire and gold, the air cool against my skin. Devon wrapped a blanket around us both and held me close as we watched the last light fade. For a while, I let myself believe this was real. That I could have nights like this forever. His heartbeat was steady beneath my ear, his warmth surrounding me. It felt perfect, maybe too perfect. I closed my eyes, trying to silence the whisper in my head. But it was still there, reminding me that happiness never stays long. And in the shadows below the balcony, I thought I saw movement. Just for a second. A trick of the light maybe. But it was enough to remind me that peace is fragile, and storms always wait.
