Chapter 91

The morning light barely touched the edges of our room when I stirred, still curled against Devon’s chest. His warmth was addictive, his steady heartbeat a rhythm I could have sworn would lull me into forever. “Addy,” he murmured, his fingers threading into my hair. “You’re awake.” I smiled sleepily, resting my hand over his. “I’m never leaving this spot,” I whispered, nuzzling closer. “Promise me I can stay a little longer.” He chuckled softly, pressing his lips to my forehead. “You can stay as long as you like. I’m not going anywhere.” For a few moments, the world was nothing but us. The soft sunlight, our intertwined bodies, the gentle rise and fall of our breathing. It felt like a dream where danger didn’t exist, where we could just be Addy and Devon, not Alpha and Luna, not targets of vengeance, not pawns in someone else’s schemes. But even in this serenity, I sensed the subtle shift the tension Devon tried so hard to hide. I felt it first in the way he stiffened when he heard the distant clatter outside, and then in the tightening of his jaw. “What is it?” I asked softly, tracing the line of his collarbone with my fingers. “Nothing,” he replied at first, and I knew that was a lie. His eyes, dark and alert, scanned the horizon outside the window. “Just routine border check. I want to keep it that way for you.” I nodded, not pushing, but a flicker of unease stirred in my chest. I trusted him, but I couldn’t help the instinct that danger was inching closer. Still, I wanted this morning, this stolen moment, to last. We spent the next hour wrapped together, teasing, whispering, laughing softly. Devon’s hands roamed, careful yet demanding, and every touch reminded me of the bond we shared the fire we ignited in each other, the promise that nothing could break us when we were together. “You know,” I said between kisses, “I’m going to miss mornings like this.” “Not if I can help it,” he murmured against my lips. “We’ll carve out every second we can. You and me, Addy. Always.” I leaned into him, letting the words wash over me. The intimacy was a shield against the unease lurking at the edges of my mind. I clung to it, needing it, desperate to feel normal, even if only for a few precious hours. But Devon’s eyes kept flicking to the horizon, scanning, calculating, silent. I could sense the storm gathering, even if I didn’t know the details yet. And as comforting as his presence was, it couldn’t completely shield me from the whispers of danger that whispered in the back of my mind. “Devon…” I murmured, my hand resting lightly on his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heart beneath my palm. “You’re worrying again, aren’t you?” He let out a breath I could feel more than hear, tilting my chin up with his fingers. “Just a little,” he admitted, his thumb tracing small circles on my jaw. “I need to protect you. That’s all.” I smiled softly, pressing my forehead against his. “I know. And I trust you.” We shared a few more moments of gentle closeness before the distant sounds reached him again faint, but sharp enough to make him tense. His body coiled with instinctive precision, every muscle alert. “Addy,” he said quietly, his voice low but firm, “stay here. I need to check.” I hesitated, wanting to protest, to insist on being by his side, but I knew better. His warning wasn’t just Alpha authority it was love, protection, a shield for me. So I nodded and stayed put, watching as he moved silently to the window, peering out at the borders where the first stirrings of chaos began to manifest. In his head, Devon’s thoughts raced. Levi had made contact. He was moving, gathering allies, and now the threat wasn’t just rumors or whispers it was real. The witch Patricia was involved again, and he could sense her magic, faint but dangerous. Their combined threat meant that the delicate balance he had maintained in the pack could shatter at any moment. He clenched his fists, his body coiled and ready, but his eyes softened when they returned to me. I could see the conflict in his gaze: the need to act, the need to protect, and the desire to keep me away from the storm. Meanwhile, I stayed on the bed, my hands gripping the sheets, trying to ground myself. I could feel Devon’s tension radiating, the pulse of the pack’s warriors shifting outside, waiting for orders, alert to their Alpha’s instincts. My heart raced not just from fear, but from the raw energy of knowing Devon was near, keeping everything at bay. Hours passed like this, tense but intimate. Devon returned periodically, brushing hair from my face, pressing soft kisses to my temples, reassuring me without words. Each touch was a promise, each whisper a tether to calm. And yet, beneath it all, I felt the gathering storm the distant rumble of what was coming. Finally, Devon returned fully, his expression hardening as he sat beside me. “It’s worse than I thought,” he admitted quietly, brushing his hand over my hair. “Levi isn’t working alone. He’s gone to my brother for help.” My stomach dropped at the words, fear twisting inside me. “Devon… he… he can’t…” “I know,” Devon said, cutting me off gently but firmly, his eyes meeting mine. “But I’ve already alerted the patrol. We’ll be ready. I promise you, Addy. Nothing will happen while I’m here.” His hands found mine, gripping tightly. “I need you to trust me. No matter what happens, stay close, stay safe. And stay with me.” I nodded, swallowing my fear, holding his hands as if anchoring myself. The intimacy of the moment the closeness, the whispers, the touch was a shield, but it couldn’t erase the knowledge that Levi’s attack and his brother’s looming threat were closing in. As the day stretched on, we remained together, entwined both physically and emotionally. Every touch, every kiss, every whispered promise deepened the bond between us. I could feel the life growing inside me, the pulse of our unborn child, the tangible connection to the future we were fighting for. Yet, even in the warmth of Devon’s arms, I couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that something was coming something that would test every ounce of our strength, every bond, every secret we held. And while we clung to each other, cherishing every stolen moment, the shadows outside waited, patient, growing stronger.
