The pack grounds were finally quiet. No more whispers, no more accusing stares. Only the sound of the night insects and the steady rhythm of my mate’s heartbeat as he carried me upstairs. Devon didn’t say a word until the door to our room closed behind us.
He set me on the bed gently, like I was fragile, though we both knew I wasn’t anymore. His hand lingered on my face, tracing the line of my jaw before he bent and kissed me, slow and soft.
“You were incredible tonight,” he murmured.
I shook my head. “I felt like I was shaking the whole time.”
“You were,” he said with a small smile. “But they didn’t see that. They saw a Luna who stood her ground even when the same people who hated her bowed before her. That’s strength, Addy.”
I buried my face in his chest, breathing in his scent. “It feels too good to be true. Like if I blink too long, it’ll disappear. Them apologizing. The way they looked at me tonight. Even you here with me.”
He tilted my chin up until our eyes met. “Nothing about this is going away. You’re mine. And this pack will learn to stand with you, or they’ll answer to me.”
The heat in his voice made my stomach tighten. His lips pressed against mine again, hungrier this time. My fingers tangled in his hair as he deepened the kiss, pulling me closer until I was straddling him. His hands slid down my back, gripping my waist like he couldn’t get enough.
For a while, there was nothing but us, his breath on my lips, my soft moans against his throat, the way his body fit perfectly with mine. The tension of the night melted into something else, something hot and desperate.
But when his lips moved down my neck, I whispered, “Devon… what if Levi really does come back?”
He froze only for a second before kissing me again, firmer, almost stubborn. “Then he’ll regret it. I won’t let him touch you. He can bring witches, rogues, even half the kingdom for all I care—I’ll cut them down before I let them near you.”
His words sent a shiver through me, half fear, half reassurance. I believed him, but Levi wasn’t just any warrior. He knew things. He had already twisted the pack once.
“What if he doesn’t come for me directly?” I asked softly. “What if he tries to take the pack from you?”
Devon pulled back enough to look at me, his eyes burning. “He can try. But you heard them tonight they’re finally seeing clearly. They’ll know who their Alpha is. And they’ll learn who their Luna is, too.”
I swallowed hard. “And if they don’t?”
His thumb brushed my lower lip. “Then you and I will stand alone, like we always have. And that will still be enough.”
The way he said it, so sure, so unshakable, made my chest ache. I kissed him fiercely, pushing away the weight of Levi’s name, letting myself get lost in the warmth of his hands on my skin.
Devon laid me back against the bed, his mouth trailing down my throat, his fingers teasing the hem of my shirt. His voice was low, rough. “I want you to forget every doubt tonight. Let me make you remember only me.”
And he did. With every touch, every kiss, every way he moved against me until I couldn’t think of anything else. The room was filled with our breaths, our whispers, the soft sounds of need and the sharp gasps of pleasure.
Afterward, tangled in the sheets with his arm wrapped around me, I traced circles on his chest. The fire inside me wasn’t just from what we’d shared it was that strange, burning power again, flickering beneath my skin. Stronger each day.
“Devon?” I whispered.
“Mm?” His voice was heavy with sleep, but his hand tightened around my waist.
“What if Levi isn’t the only one we should be worried about?”
His eyes opened slowly, dark and steady on mine. “Then we’ll fight whoever it is. Together.”
I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe this peace, this warmth, could last. But deep inside, something told me it was only the calm before something bigger.
For now, though, I let myself sink into his arms, because tonight, he was mine and I was his. And that was enough.
