Before we get to the subject of this month’s column, I regret that I must bring up a point of etiquette. I receive many, many letters, and believe me when I say that I am gratified by your kind responses and eager questions. However, of late I have noticed a tendency among some to assume a greater familiarity with me and my lodgers than they actually possess. I realize that, given the intimacy Dr Watson’s stories appear to afford his readers, you may feel that you know us as well as you know your own family, but I am afraid that this is only an assumption on your parts. I cannot discuss the private lives of my tenants, nor will I impart to them the advice many of you wish to give.
