CHAPTER 6: THE FIXER'S COLD LOGIC
The ambient hum of the internet cafe faded as Krueger stared into the
eyes of the man who had signed his death warrant. Outside, the thunder
rolled over Ikoyi, shaking the thin glass panes of the basement window.
KRUEGER
"You missed your shot at the airport, Teriq.
You're getting sloppy in your old age."
TERIQ
"It’s a statistical certainty, Matthew.
You're one man against an entire operational
budget. The camera in Tehran caught your
face. The Iranians have the raw data. Within
twelve hours, they will broadcast it to the
world. A rogue American assassin executing a
minister. We can't allow that narrative to
exist."
Krueger leaned closer to the monitor, his voice dropping to a harsh,
lethal whisper that cut through the background noise of the room.
KRUEGER "I did your dirty work because you promised
me out. I paid my debt to your agency ten
times over."
TERIQ
"Men like you don't get an 'out,' Sergeant.
You just get a shorter leash until you're
put down. I've doubled the bounty on your
head. Local militias, contract teams, state
police—they all have your grid coordinates
now. Die gracefully. It saves everyone the
paperwork."
The feed cut to black. A sudden electronic alarm began to blare from the
cafe's central router. The terminal screen turned red, displaying a
localized GPS lock on his exact position. They had tracked the
connection.
