CHAPTER 8: SURVIVING THE DEEP
The impact with the water was like hitting a concrete wall. The
windshield shattered completely, allowing the freezing, murky lagoon
water to rush into the cabin with terrifying force. Krueger’s lungs
burned as he fought against the rush of water, his tactical vest dragging
him down into the dark abyss.
His door was jammed shut by the structural deformation of the chassis.
Working calmly despite the total lack of oxygen, Krueger reached into his
tactical boot, pulling a short-bladed steel dive knife. He drove the
blade into the side window seal, prying the cracked glass loose until it
popped out into the current. He squeezed his broad shoulders through the
narrow frame, kicking away from the sinking metal tomb.
He swam toward the surface, keeping his movements minimal to avoid
detection by the high-powered spotlights swinging from the bridge above.
He broke the surface beneath the massive concrete pylons of the bridge,
gasping for air in the shadows where the light couldn't penetrate. Above
him, he could hear the shouting of mercenary spotters and the sound of
helicopters approaching from the city center.
Krueger grabbed a floating piece of industrial debris, using it to keep
his head above water as the current dragged him away from the bridge
toward the sprawling, dark expanse of the floating slums of Makoko. He
was bleeding from a deep cut on his forehead, his body temperature
dropping rapidly, but his eyes remained fixed on the horizon. sudden flash of light from a boat's engine cut through the fog ahead
of him. A search patrol was already sweeping the water, their hull
cutting directly toward his floating position.
