CHAPTER 4: THE MOTORWAY ESCAPE
Krueger sprinted across the slick tarmac, his boots kicking up sprays of
gray water. He targeted an idling airport luggage tug, kicking the driver
out and slamming his foot onto the accelerator. The small utility vehicle
lurched forward, crashing through a lightweight chain-link security gate
just as a heavy SUV rammed the rear bumper, sending sparks flying into
the dark.
He abandoned the crippled tug at the edge of the Airport Road highway
network, scaling a concrete barrier into the flowing traffic of Lagos at
midnight. The rain was torrential, reducing visibility to less than
twenty feet. Headlights from yellow commercial 'Danfo' buses blinded him
momentarily as he lunged into the path of an oncoming flatbed delivery truck.
Krueger grabbed the iron racks on the side, swinging his legs up
just as a black sedan pulled alongside, a shooter leaning out of the
passenger window with an automatic rifle.
Krueger pulled his sidearm, firing through the truck's rusted framework
into the sedan's front tire. The rubber disintegrated at eighty miles per
hour. The sedan violently veered left, colliding with a concrete
structural pillar supporting the overhead highway link, exploding into a
brief ball of orange fire that was immediately suppressed by the
downpour.
He crawled along the roof of the moving flatbed, reaching the cab. He
shattered the passenger window with his elbow, diving inside. The driver
screamed, slamming on the brakes. Krueger grabbed the steering wheel,
stabilizing the vehicle as they skidded across three lanes of traffic
toward the entrance of the city's main arterial highway system.
As he forced the truck straight, a massive armored tactical transport
vehicle roared up from the rear, its reinforced grill designed
specifically to crush anything in its path, pinning Krueger against the
highway railing.
