CHAPTER 20 The rising sun took the chill off the morning. The group would stay one more night and one more day, maybe bag some game, pack and prepare, then depart at the first light of the following day. “I’m not a bad shot,” Jude said. “Why not give me a gun and I’ll hunt for deer.” Russell shook his head. “Not with that ankle.” “We aren’t travelling by night?” Rocky asked. “No need to,” Russell said. “We’re headed into an unpopulated forested area, so not much danger of running into anyone.” “Besides,” said Chaco, “with the rough trails, wildlife, and rattlesnakes…” Chaco cast a sideways glance in Jude’s direction, then turned back to Rocky, “…we need sunlight to see what’s around us.” The little girls were a short distance away under Margo’s watchful eye, quiet.
