CHAPTER 16
There were so many abandoned vehicles and debris on the streets that by the time the group made it out of Green Lake late that morning. Other than a group of ragged men who failed in their attempt to chase them down on foot, there were no incidents. Mostly, Green Lake and the surrounding areas resembled a ghost town. Stray cats and dogs roamed the streets in large numbers. Chaco imagined that the animals would evolve, learn to walk on their hind legs, develop language and create sophisticated canine and feline societies. Cats and dogs would work together to plot a global takeover. They would capture and herd humans they would train to do their bidding, and force them to wear collars and tags. How else would these domesticated pets survive without anyone to care for them?
