CHAPTER 17 The afternoon passed in a haze. On a rumpled blanket, Bethany passed out in a fitful tangle of limbs. The little girls remained by her side, sniffling. The group decided to stay put until Bethany healed enough to travel. Margo and Abigail took turns tending the injured woman. “I’d prefer we left now,” said Rocky. “The longer the delay, the more chance we have of running into dangerous weather.” “Bethany is far too injured to travel,” said Russell. “Whatever,” said Rocky, throwing up his hands in resignation. “I think it’s too risky for us to stay here, but I suppose my opinion doesn’t matter.” “There’s water, shade, and we are well off the main road. As long as we stay low and remain quiet, no one traveling this way will even know we’re here. We can take turns on guard duty
