CHAPTER 24
From the position of the stars, Chaco determined it had to be close to Christmas. “Mrs. Walker, I don’t know how we can celebrate but is there a little something we can do for the girls?”
“Oh, my. Yes. I’ll figure out some way to make the occasion special. Let me talk to Russ and Margo.”
When Chaco found the girls sobbing on a blanket under a tree, he thought it might be because they knew it was Christmas, and there would be no Santa this year, but that wasn’t it.
“I want my mommy,” said Lacy. “Is she in heaven?”
“It’s okay,” said Olivia. “We’ll see her again, and Rufus, too. Won’t we, Chaco?” With the back of her hand, Olivia wiped tears from her cheeks.
