Except for his years studying in Bonn, Germany, and his travels through Europe, Chaco had spent his entire life in the Americas. He’d lived mostly in El Salvador, a year in Mexico as a visiting student, a summer hiking through Brazil, and the past five, going on six, in the United States. He had survived some terrible quakes, including the 2016 Riverside Quake that killed twenty-seven people, injured hundreds more, and caused extensive damage to the Walker and Pennymons’ neighborhood.
