Chapter 7: THE WARNING THAT FOLLOWED HER HOME

572 Words
The school bell doesn’t matter anymore once Emma steps out of Class 2-3. The hallway feels normal again—students laughing, lockers slamming, someone running past shouting about homework. Everything looks like nothing happened. But Emma feels it. That strange pressure hasn’t left her body. Like something followed her out of that classroom. Sofia walks beside her for a few steps, glancing at her carefully. “You okay?” Sofia asks. Emma hesitates. “I think so.” But even she doesn’t sound convinced. Behind them, Ryan is still talking loudly to someone else, trying to act normal again, but his voice is too fast, too nervous. “Bro, I swear that guy just walked in like a movie character or something—” Lily walks past them without saying a word. But she slows down just enough beside Emma. Just enough for Emma to hear her. “You’ll understand soon,” Lily says quietly. Then she keeps walking. Emma stops for half a second. Sofia notices. “Don’t listen to her.” Emma nods, but her eyes follow Lily down the hallway until she disappears. The walk home feels longer than usual. The streets are busy, cars moving, people talking, everything continuing like normal life never paused inside that classroom. But Emma can’t unhear Evan’s voice. That seat doesn’t forget. And she can’t unsee Daniel’s expression when Evan spoke. He didn’t look surprised. He looked… restrained. Like someone holding something in place so it doesn’t fall apart. When Emma reaches her house, she hesitates at the gate for a moment. Then pushes it open. Inside, the smell of dinner already fills the house. Laura Park is in the kitchen, moving between pots and plates like she always does after work. “You’re late today,” her mother says without turning. “I stayed a bit after class,” Emma replies, taking off her shoes. Michael Park is sitting at the table, reading something on his phone. He looks up briefly. “You look tired,” he says. Emma pauses. “School was… noisy.” Laura turns slightly. “Bad noisy or normal noisy?” Emma almost answers normally. But then she remembers the seat. So she just says, “Normal.” Dinner continues like usual. Rice. Soup. Small questions. Small answers. But Emma eats less than normal. Laura notices. “You didn’t finish your food.” “I’m not hungry.” Michael folds his phone down. “Is something wrong at school?” Emma shakes her head too quickly. “No.” A pause. Then Laura sighs softly. “You always say no.” Emma doesn’t respond. Because she doesn’t know how to explain something she doesn’t understand herself. That night, Emma lies in bed but doesn’t sleep. Her phone lights up once. A message. SOFIA: Don’t overthink today. Just ignore Lily. Emma stares at it for a moment. Then another message comes in. Unknown number. No name. Just one line. If you sit there tomorrow, don’t talk to Daniel first. Emma sits up slightly. Her heart doesn’t jump immediately. It slows. Like her body already understands this is not random. She looks at the screen again. No second message. No explanation. Just that sentence. Outside her window, the street is quiet. Too quiet. And for the first time since the seat incident… Emma realizes something unsettling. The problem isn’t just at school. It’s reaching her even when she leaves it.
