Chapter 12:THE NIGHT THEY STOPPED BEING STRANGERS

908 Words
Emma didn’t sleep properly after the message appeared. She kept staring at her phone even after the screen dimmed, like if she watched it long enough, it might explain itself. But it didn’t. The house around her stayed quiet, her parents’ footsteps fading into their own rooms, while Emma remained awake in a silence that felt heavier than normal night silence. At one point, she got up and walked to the window. Outside, the street was empty, but not peaceful. Just still. Like everything was waiting without saying so. You’re not just sitting there anymore. The words kept repeating in her mind. The next morning came too fast. Laura Park was already awake, dressed in her hospital uniform, tying her hair while checking her watch. Michael was preparing to leave early for work again, adjusting his shirt collar in front of the mirror. “You didn’t sleep?” Laura asked immediately when she saw Emma enter the kitchen. “I did,” Emma replied quickly. But her mother didn’t look convinced. She placed a hand briefly on Emma’s forehead, checking like she used to when Emma was younger. “You’re warm,” she said softly. “I’m fine,” Emma insisted. Michael glanced over. “School again?” Emma paused. That pause was enough. Laura sighed quietly. “Eat something before you leave.” But Emma barely touched her breakfast. At the same time, Daniel Kim was already outside his house, walking alone through the early morning streets. The bakery behind him was still closed, his mother likely inside preparing dough and trays for the day ahead. He didn’t say much when he left, and she didn’t ask questions anymore. That was their pattern now. Quiet understanding without conversation. But today, Daniel didn’t go straight to school. He stopped halfway. Near a small convenience store at the corner of the street, where someone was already waiting. Evan. He was leaning against the wall like he had been there for a while, calm, patient, watching people pass by without really reacting to them. Daniel stopped when he saw him. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Just the sound of morning traffic between them. Then Evan spoke first. “You’re late.” Daniel replied flatly. “You’re not supposed to be here.” Evan smiled slightly. “Neither are you, if we’re being honest.” That made Daniel’s expression tighten slightly. Evan pushed himself off the wall and stepped closer, lowering his voice. “She read the message,” he said. Daniel didn’t respond immediately. But his silence said enough. Evan continued, “So now she’s inside it too.” Daniel finally spoke. “She was never supposed to be involved.” Evan tilted his head. “That’s what you said last time too.” A long pause followed. Not angry. Not loud. Just heavy. Then Daniel walked past him. But Evan spoke again before he could leave. “Are you going to protect her properly this time… or repeat history?” Daniel stopped. Just for a second. Then continued walking. Emma arrived at school later that morning with Sofia waiting near the entrance. “You look worse,” Sofia said immediately. “Thanks,” Emma replied quietly. Sofia didn’t smile. “I’m serious. Did something happen again?” Emma hesitated. “Another message.” Sofia’s expression changed instantly. “Show me.” But Emma didn’t answer immediately. Because as she looked toward the classroom window, she saw Daniel already inside. Watching the door. Waiting. And beside him, Lily was also there. Watching him. Not Emma. Him. Ryan came running in behind them, slightly out of breath. “Okay, I swear something weird happened outside—” He stopped mid-sentence when he noticed everyone’s faces. “…Never mind,” he said slowly. “It’s already that kind of day.” Inside Class 2-3, the atmosphere felt tighter than usual. Not because anything had been said yet. But because everyone already felt like something was about to be said. Emma walked to her seat slowly. Daniel didn’t speak at first. Lily didn’t either. Sofia stayed behind Emma, watching everything carefully. Ryan sat down quietly for once. Then Daniel finally spoke. Not to the class. Only to Emma. “You saw him this morning,” he said. Emma froze slightly. “…Evan?” Daniel nodded once. That was enough. Emma looked at him directly now. “Why does he keep appearing like that?” Daniel didn’t answer immediately. Then quietly, he said, “Because he was there before you.” That sentence landed differently. Not dramatic. Not loud. Just heavy enough to change the way Emma breathed. Lily suddenly stood up. “This is ridiculous,” she said sharply. “Why is everyone acting like she’s part of something she doesn’t understand?” Daniel finally looked at Lily. And for the first time, his voice wasn’t calm. “Because she is.” Silence dropped instantly. Emma’s fingers tightened slightly on her desk. Ryan whispered under his breath, “Okay… that sounded serious-serious.” Sofia didn’t speak. Even Lily didn’t respond immediately. Because Daniel’s expression had changed. Not fully broken. But close enough that everyone could feel it. And for the first time since Emma sat in that seat… It didn’t feel like she was being warned anymore. It felt like she was already inside the story. And there was no way out that didn’t involve the past catching up to her.
