Emma couldn’t focus for the rest of the lesson.
Mr. Lee’s voice moved through the classroom like normal, explaining the topic on the board, asking questions no one really wanted to answer. But Emma heard none of it properly. Her thoughts kept drifting back to what Sofia said.
Someone else sat there too.
And they didn’t finish the school year.
She tried to convince herself it was just a rumor, the kind students created when they were bored or curious. But the problem was the way everyone reacted to that seat. The way Lily looked at her. The way Daniel refused to explain anything.
And worse… the way Daniel didn’t deny it.
Beside her, Daniel remained quiet as usual, but today his silence felt heavier. He wasn’t relaxed like before. His fingers rested on the edge of his desk, unmoving, as if he was forcing himself not to react to anything happening around him.
When class finally ended, Emma stood slowly, but she didn’t leave immediately. She noticed Daniel didn’t move either.
That was unusual.
Most students rushed out the moment the bell rang, but Daniel stayed seated, staring at the empty space in front of him like he was waiting for the room to clear completely.
Emma hesitated, then asked quietly, “Did something happen before… with that seat?”
Daniel didn’t answer at first. For a moment, it seemed like he might ignore her completely, like he always did when conversations went too deep.
But this time, he didn’t.
“There are things you shouldn’t ask about,” he said calmly.
Emma frowned slightly. “That’s not an answer.”
Daniel finally turned his head just enough to look at her. His expression wasn’t cold, but it wasn’t open either. It was controlled, like someone holding something back carefully.
“It is for your own good,” he replied.
That made Emma go quiet for a moment.
Before she could say anything else, the classroom door opened again.
But this time, it wasn’t a teacher.
A boy stepped inside.
He looked slightly younger or maybe just new enough that no one reacted immediately. His uniform was neat, his expression calm, but there was something unusual about him. Not his appearance… but the way he looked at the classroom, like he already knew where everything was supposed to be.
Ryan, who had been packing his bag, paused. “Uh… who is that?”
Sofia frowned slightly. “I don’t think he’s in our class.”
The boy’s eyes scanned the room once… then stopped.
Right on Emma’s seat.
And then, slowly, he smiled.
Not warmly.
Not friendly.
More like recognition.
Daniel stood up immediately.
The movement was so sudden it made Emma step back slightly.
“Evan,” Daniel said, his voice lower than before.
The name hit the room differently.
Like it meant something no one else understood.
Lily, who had been watching from the other side of the room, also went still.
Evan didn’t take his eyes off Emma’s desk as he spoke.
“So that’s the one,” he said quietly.
Ryan blinked. “The one? The one what?”
Evan ignored him.
Instead, he walked forward.
Each step was slow, controlled, almost too confident for someone who wasn’t even supposed to be there.
Mr. Lee entered the classroom at the same moment, and for the first time, his expression changed slightly when he saw Evan.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
But something closer to discomfort.
“You’re not supposed to be here,” Mr. Lee said sharply.
Evan tilted his head slightly. “I know.”
That answer didn’t make sense, and the silence that followed felt heavier than anything Emma had experienced before.
Daniel’s eyes didn’t leave Evan.
Neither did Evan’s.
And in that moment, Emma realized something that made her chest tighten slightly.
Whatever the seat meant…
Evan was part of it.
