Chapter 11: Resistance code...

312 Words
--- *Resistance Code* The figure who called himself NORA didn’t give a name — just a node location scrawled on a black chip and a warning not to follow them until sunrise. Then he vanished into the dark like smoke. Jayden and Mary sat in silence for several minutes after, huddled behind a stack of old steel rails. Mary broke it first. “Your brother… he was working with them?” Jayden nodded slowly, staring at the cracked police badge in his hand. “He never told me. I thought he was just driving for Maestro, trying to survive like the rest of us. But he was playing both sides.” “He died for it?” “Yeah.” Jayden clenched his fist. “But now I know what for.” By sunrise, they had hotwired a rusted-out cargo runner and made their way across the freight yard. The directions on the chip led them to a hidden maintenance hatch beneath an abandoned loading dock. It looked like nothing — a pile of scrap overgrown with vines. But when Jayden slid the chip into the slot on a rusted access panel, the ground beneath them *clicked*, then slowly lifted, revealing a ramp of steel and LED lights glowing dimly in the dust. Mary whistled. “Now *that’s* an entrance.”“You’re the only driver to survive Maestro’s hits, the only one fast enough to run through Sector Lines without being tracked. We’ve got drop points all over the grid. We leak these files node by node, anonymously. You’ll deliver them.” Mary raised an eyebrow. “And me?” Kira smiled faintly. “We need someone to keep him alive.” Jayden smirked. “Looks like I just got promoted.” Kira extended a hand. “You in?” He took it. “Let’s burn the city down.” ---
