*Chapter 14: Secrets and Shadows* Jayden sat on the cracked bench outside the café, the fading sunlight casting long shadows over the busy street. Mary joined him, carrying two steaming cups of tea. The warmth seeped into his cold hands, but it wasn’t the only thing heating the air between them. “Jay,” Mary began, her voice low and hesitant, “there’s something I need to tell you. Something I should’ve said a long time ago.” Jayden looked at her, curiosity mixing with concern. “What is it?” She took a deep breath, her eyes never leaving his. “You know how we’ve been fighting against Maestro and his network? It’s personal for me. My dad... he was one of the Resistance’s first fighters. He disappeared when I was young, after an attack on one of our safe houses.” Jayden’s heart clenched. He had always sensed Mary carried more than just friendship in her heart, but this was different—this was a wound that ran deep. “I’ve been training myself to be ready for this fight,” she continued, “to finish what he started.” Jayden swallowed hard. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because I wanted you to decide for yourself. I didn’t want to drag you into a war you didn’t choose.”But danger lurked close. Maestro’s network was vast, and every signal they intercepted revealed just how powerful their enemy truly was. As Jayden closed his eyes that night, memories of his father’s stories and Mary’s confession intertwined. This fight wasn’t just about survival—it was about reclaiming hope. And with Mary by his side, Jayden felt ready to face whatever shadows lay ahead.
