*Chapter 15: The Betrayal*
The cold wind bit through Jayden’s jacket as he stood on the rooftop overlooking the city. The neon lights flickered below, casting eerie glows on the wet streets. Mary was beside him, her expression unreadable in the dim light.
“We have a leak,” she said quietly. “Someone in the Resistance is working for Maestro.”
Jayden’s heart sank. Betrayal wasn’t new in their line of work, but knowing it was so close made the fight even harder.
“Who?” Jayden demanded.
Mary shook her head. “Not sure yet. But I have my suspicions.”
For days, they watched, listened, and gathered information. Every trusted contact became a possible traitor. Paranoia crept into their ranks, threatening to tear them apart.
One night, while checking encrypted messages, Mary stumbled upon a clue — a rendezvous point scheduled in the dead of night.
“We have to be there,” she said, determination flashing in her eyes.
Jayden nodded. “We’ll catch the rat.”
They arrived at the deserted warehouse just before midnight. Shadows moved inside, voices whispered secrets. Jayden’s pulse quickened as he spotted a familiar figure slipping through the darkness.
It was one of their own — *Derek*, a quiet man who had earned Jayden’s trust.
“Why, Derek?” Mary whispered. Before they could confront him, Derek pulled a gun.
“I’m sorry,” he said, eyes cold. “Maestro pays well.”
A firefight erupted. Jayden and Mary ducked behind crates, returning fire. The warehouse echoed with gunshots and shouts.
In the chaos, Derek escaped, but his betrayal left scars deeper than any wound.
Later, as Jayden cleaned his wounds, Mary sat beside him.
“We can’t let this stop us,” she said softly. “If anything, it makes the fight more important.”
Jayden looked at her and nodded. “For the Resistance. For everyone counting on us.”
The city outside buzzed with life, oblivious to the battles fought in shadows. Jayden knew the road ahead was dangerous, but with Mary and the Resistance, he was ready to face whatever came next.
The fight was far from over.
