Chapter 3
Amber Foster’s POV
The next morning, the sunlight filtered through my bedroom window, but I barely noticed. I was still reeling from the events of the night before. My phone buzzed incessantly on the nightstand, but I couldn’t bring myself to check it. The looming dread of facing Liam gnawed at me, but I couldn’t hide forever. I had to pull myself together; I had a job to do.
I forced myself out of bed and dressed in a crisp white blouse and a navy pencil skirt. The mirror reflected a tired version of myself, but I plastered on a smile, hoping it would convince me that I was fine. I grabbed my purse and headed to the office, my mind still clouded with uncertainty.
The elevator doors opened on the floor of my company, and I stepped into the familiar hustle and bustle of the office. The moment I crossed the threshold, the energy shifted. Conversations buzzed around me, but I felt as though I were moving in slow motion. I couldn’t shake the feeling that eyes were on me, whispering secrets I wasn’t privy to.
“Amber! Over here!” Hayley called out from her desk, waving me over. Her face brightened when she saw me, but I noticed a flicker of concern in her eyes.
“Hey!” I replied, forcing enthusiasm into my voice as I approached. “How was your weekend?”
“Busy as usual. But enough about me. How was yours?” she asked, her tone laced with an undertone of curiosity. I couldn’t meet her gaze; my stomach churned at the thought of lying.
“It was good. Just… relaxed, you know?” I replied, avoiding any specifics. Hayley studied me for a moment, but before she could pry further, I shifted the focus. “Did you get a chance to finish that report for Ethan?”
“Yeah, I just sent it over. You know how he is—always needing everything yesterday.” Hayley rolled her eyes, and I couldn’t help but chuckle. Ethan had a reputation for being demanding, but I respected his drive.
I took a deep breath, pushing thoughts of last night away as I headed to my desk. The office was buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming quarterly meeting. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I needed to be on my A-game. Ethan would expect nothing less.
After a few minutes of skimming through emails, I felt a familiar presence behind me. I turned to find Ethan standing there, tall and imposing in his tailored suit. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his blue eyes seemed to pierce through me.
“Amber,” he said, his voice smooth yet authoritative. “Can you come into my office for a moment?”
My heart raced, and I nodded, rising from my seat. What did he want? I steeled myself as I walked past Hayley, who shot me a questioning look. I pushed the door to Ethan’s office open, stepping inside.
“Close the door, please,” he instructed, settling into his chair as I took a seat across from him.
I complied, my mind racing. “Is everything okay?” I asked, trying to sound casual.
Ethan leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers. “I wanted to talk about the presentation for the board meeting. I need you to take the lead on this one. You’ve got a solid grasp of the numbers and the strategy.”
“Of course,” I said, grateful for the responsibility but also nervous. “I can prepare a draft and share it with you later today.”
“Good. I want this to impress them,” he said, a hint of intensity in his tone. “And Amber, I expect you to be ready for anything. We can’t afford to falter in front of the board.”
I nodded, absorbing his words. “I understand. I’ll make sure it’s perfect.”
He studied me for a moment, his expression unreadable. “You’re one of our best assets, Amber. Don’t forget that.”
“Thanks, Ethan. I’ll do my best,” I replied, feeling a strange mix of pride and pressure. I stood to leave, but as I turned to the door, he called out my name.
“Amber?”
“Yes?”
“Make sure you’re focused. The last thing we need is distractions,” he said, his gaze intense. It felt as though he could see through the facade I was desperately trying to maintain. I swallowed hard, the weight of his words sinking in.
“Of course. I’ll be focused,” I assured him, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling that had settled in my stomach. I left his office, heart racing, and returned to my desk, the weight of his gaze lingering.
As I sat down, I noticed Hayley watching me. “What did he want?” she asked, her brow furrowed.
“Just about the board meeting. I’m leading the presentation,” I replied, forcing a smile. I couldn’t tell her about Ethan’s intense gaze, or the unsettling feeling that had crept in when he mentioned distractions.
“That’s awesome! You’ll crush it,” she said, her enthusiasm a welcome distraction. “But remember to keep your head clear.”
“Definitely,” I said, though I wasn’t sure if I could. My thoughts were muddled, and the shadows of last night loomed large.
As the day progressed, I tried to focus on work, but my mind kept drifting back to the hotel room, the stranger, and the fear of what would happen when the truth came out.
I found myself texting Hayley during a break, the urge to confide in her gnawing at me.
Hey, can we talk later?
Her response was immediate. Sure! What’s up?
Just… I need to sort some things out.
You okay?
I hesitated, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. I couldn’t tell her. Not yet.
Yeah, just a bit overwhelmed with work.
Got it. Coffee after work?
Sounds good.
The rest of the day passed in a blur, and as I prepared to leave, I felt a mix of anxiety and relief. I needed to clear my head, and a chat with Hayley might help.
As I stepped out of the office, I caught sight of Ethan again, deep in conversation with another executive. I paused, feeling a strange pull towards him, as if the memories of last night were whispering to me. But I quickly shook my head and continued out, refusing to let the thoughts consume me.
When I finally met Hayley at the coffee shop, I tried to push aside my worries, focusing on her as she animatedly recounted stories from her weekend. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that something dark loomed just beneath the surface.
“I’m glad we’re doing this,” I said, forcing a smile. “I really needed to get out.”
“Me too! You’ve been working too hard lately,” Hayley said, her eyes sparkling with concern. “What’s going on? You seem a bit off.”
“I’m just… stressed about the presentation,” I lied, hoping she wouldn’t pry further.
She nodded, but I could see the concern etched on her face. “You’ll do great, Amber. Just remember, you’re not alone in this.”
“Thanks, Hayley,” I said, appreciating her support. But deep down, I knew I was alone in this. I was carrying a burden that could shatter everything.
As we talked and laughed, I tried to push away the memories of last night. But they lingered, like a shadow I couldn’t escape. And I couldn’t shake the feeling that soon, the truth would come out. And when it did, it would change everything.
To be continued.
