16 Abigail pulled her shorts up and checked she looked presentable in the mirror. With her hair tied back in a ponytail, and wearing a dark vest, she thought she was ready for hard labor in the barn, save for her sneakers, which were brand new and blindingly white in the sun. It took her a further fifteen minutes to rush downstairs and make herself some toast. After spreading a thick layer of jam across it, she devoured the toast and washed up her plate.
