Chapter Thirteen: Shadows from the Flame

807 Words
They slept uneasily that night, aware of eyes in the dark. The fire cracked low in the pit, Kaelen’s blade never far from his reach, Lucien murmuring wards into the cold air. Elara rested with one eye open, her back to the stone wall of the canyon they’d taken shelter in. Morning brought mist, thick and clinging like memory. Elara rose first, feeling the flame stir beneath her skin. It had grown hungrier since the Hollow Temple, more aware—like it sensed its purpose drawing near. She stepped away from the others, walking to a cliff edge where the mountains fell away into lowland forest. In the distance, she saw the ruins of a city—once a thriving center of Flamebearer rule, now a graveyard of crumbled towers and choking ivy. That would be their path. Lucien joined her moments later, his presence quiet. “You remember this place?” “I was crowned there,” Elara said. “Just before the Circle began their purge.” He hesitated. “And you still want to go back?” “I have to.” Kaelen approached then, eyes scanning the forest. “We’re being followed.” “Nyra,” Elara said. “You’re sure?” Lucien asked. “I felt her. In the night. She didn’t strike.” “Why would she wait?” Kaelen frowned. “Because she doesn’t know if she wants me dead,” Elara said. “Not yet.” They reached the ruins by midday, climbing over moss-covered stones and shattered statues. The wind carried the faint scent of magic, brittle and old. Vines had consumed what once were gardens; the bones of buildings stood hollow, their windows shattered like broken eyes. “This was once the city of Solinar,” Elara said softly. “The heart of our order.” Kaelen touched a fallen mural. “They destroyed everything.” “No,” Elara said, stepping toward a still-standing archway. “They missed something.” She placed her hand on the stone. The Flame surged, illuminating a hidden path beneath the city. Lucien’s breath caught. “A vault?” “A sanctuary,” she said. “Buried in secret after the Circle began its hunt.” The entrance yawned before them, swallowing the light. They descended into the dark. Nyra stood at the city’s edge, cloaked in shadow. She watched them vanish into the ruins, her heart an uneasy drum. She remembered the last time she and Elara had stood face to face. Flame and steel. Tears and betrayal. Elara had spared her. Now, the Circle demanded Nyra take that mercy and extinguish it. But something within her hesitated. Something that remembered the girl who’d once fought for more than vengeance. Nyra followed them into the vault. Below the ruins, the sanctuary spread like the roots of a vast tree. Crystalline light pulsed from ancient braziers, responding to Elara’s presence. They passed through memory-etched halls, past relics of wars long buried—armor, banners, books charred by time. “It’s all still here,” Kaelen whispered. “They tried to erase us,” Elara said. “But truth doesn’t burn.” In the sanctuary’s heart, they found the Mirror of Flame—an artifact older than the Circle, capable of revealing not just truth, but possibility. Elara approached it carefully. “This was how I saw what might come,” she said. “How I made my choice.” Lucien stepped beside her. “Will it show us what’s next?” She touched the glass. Fire bloomed across the mirror’s surface, resolving into images: —Elara standing in fire, crown alight, the world bowing before her. —Lucien at her side, or kneeling in chains. —Kaelen bleeding, defending her. —Nyra facing her with a blade, hesitation in her eyes. —The Circle’s tower crumbling under a storm of flame. —A child, bathed in firelight, eyes glowing like Elara’s. She staggered back. “The future is not fixed,” she said. “But it’s full of blood.” Nyra entered silently. Kaelen’s blade was at her throat before she could take a step. “Wait,” Elara said. Nyra met her gaze, steady. “I didn’t come to kill you.” Lucien bristled. “Then why?” “To remember,” Nyra said. “And to ask if there’s still something left worth saving.” Silence fell. Elara stepped forward. “That depends on whether you’re here as a weapon of the Circle, or as the girl who once swore to protect the Flame.” Nyra’s jaw tightened. “I don’t know anymore.” Elara lowered her hand. “Then stay. Until you do.” Kaelen sheathed his blade slowly. The past and present stood together, tangled but unbroken. In the Mirror’s reflection, the future waited. And it burned.
