Chapter One
Lily Hart adjusted the tray in her trembling hands as loud music blasted through Velvet Nights Lounge.
“Table seven!” her manager barked.
“I’m going!” Lily snapped back softly before hurrying across the crowded club.
Her legs ached from standing all night, but she couldn’t afford to complain. Rent was overdue. Her mother’s hospital bills kept piling up. And losing this job would destroy everything.
She placed the drinks carefully on the VIP table.
“Anything else, sir?”
The men ignored her completely except one.
He sat at the center of the luxurious couch, dressed in an expensive black suit that screamed power. His sharp jawline tightened as dark eyes slowly lifted to meet hers.
Lily froze.
God.
The man was terrifyingly handsome.
The air around him felt dangerous, heavy, suffocating.
He looked at her like prey.
“You’re new,” he said calmly.
His voice was deep enough to send chills down her spine.
“Yes, sir.”
One of the men beside him laughed nervously. “Damian doesn’t usually notice waitresses.”
Damian.
The name alone made the atmosphere tense.
Lily had heard whispers before.
Damian Knight.
CEO of Knight Holdings.
The youngest billionaire in the country.
The man rumored to have connections with gangsters and politicians alike.
Some people called him a genius.
Others called him a monster.
His gaze remained fixed on her face.
“What’s your name?”
“Lily.”
He leaned back slowly, studying her like he was trying to uncover every secret hidden beneath her skin.
“You’re too innocent for this place, Lily.”
She forced a smile. “Unfortunately, innocence doesn’t pay bills.”
One corner of his lips lifted slightly.
Not quite a smile.
Something darker.
Interesting.
Before she could leave, a drunk customer suddenly grabbed her wrist.
“Hey sweetheart, why don’t you sit on my lap?”
Lily jerked away immediately. “Let go of me.”
The man laughed harder.
Then the room turned deadly silent.
Damian stood up.
Slowly.
Every single person at the table looked terrified.
The drunk man released Lily instantly. “I—I was joking.”
Damian stepped closer.
“You touched what isn’t yours.”
The calmness in his voice was far scarier than shouting.
“Sir, I didn’t mean—”
“Get out.”
The man stumbled away without another word.
Lily’s heart pounded violently.
Damian turned toward her again.
“You should be more careful.”
“I can protect myself.”
His dark eyes narrowed slightly, amused by her attitude.
“Can you?”
For some reason, the question irritated her.
“I don’t need saving.”
Damian moved closer until she could smell his expensive cologne.
“Everyone needs saving, Lily.”
Her breath caught.
Why did he look at her like that?
Like he already owned her.
She quickly stepped back. “Excuse me, I need to work.”
Before she could leave, his hand wrapped gently around her wrist.
Electricity shot through her body.
“I want you in my office tomorrow morning.”
Her eyes widened.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I’m just a waitress.”
“And tomorrow,” Damian said calmly, “you’ll work for me.”
---
Lily barely slept that night.
The memory of Damian’s eyes haunted her endlessly.
Cold.
Possessive.
Dangerous.
Everything about him screamed trouble.
Yet a strange part of her couldn’t stop thinking about the way he protected her.
The next morning, she stood nervously in front of Knight Holdings, staring at the massive glass building.
People rushed in and out wearing expensive suits while luxury cars lined the entrance.
This world was nothing like hers.
A secretary escorted her upstairs to the top floor.
When the elevator doors opened, Lily’s stomach tightened.
The office was enormous.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the entire city.
And there he was.
Damian Knight.
Standing near the window in a black suit that fit his muscular body perfectly.
Without turning around, he spoke.
“You came.”
Lily crossed her arms nervously. “You said it like I didn’t have a choice.”
He finally faced her.
God.
In daylight, he looked even more dangerously attractive.
“I always give people a choice,” he replied calmly.
Something about that statement felt like a lie.
Damian walked toward her slowly.
Every step carried confidence and control.
“I need a personal assistant.”
Lily blinked. “Me?”
“You’re honest.”
“You barely know me.”
“I know enough.”
She laughed nervously. “You’re offering a stranger a job in one of the biggest companies in the city?”
“Yes.”
“That makes no sense.”
Damian stopped directly in front of her.
“Neither does the fact that I can’t stop thinking about you.”
Her heartbeat nearly stopped.
What kind of man says things like that so casually?
“I think you’re used to getting whatever you want,” she whispered.
His eyes darkened.
“I am.”
The tension between them became unbearable.
Lily knew she should leave.
Run.
Forget this man ever existed.
But deep down, she also knew her life had already changed the moment Damian Knight looked at her.
And she had a terrifying feeling the devil in the black suit was about to ruin her completely.
