Chapter 58 : THE SECOND FLAW

529 Words
The intelligence gathered from the ley lines, grim as it was, provided them with a new avenue of attack against the curse. They now understood that the curse fed on the negative energy generated by the conflict and suffering in the world. This led them to a critical new theory."The curse is a parasite," An-li reasoned, pacing back and forth in the cavern, her mind alight with the new idea. "It’s anchored to the sword, yes, but it draws its strength, its very sustenance, from the outside world. If we could somehow… disrupt its feeding, we could weaken it."It was a brilliant insight. They had found a second flaw. Their first attack had been a direct assault on the curse’s binding magic. This second attack would be indirect. They would starve it.But how? They were trapped on the mountain, unable to influence the world directly. They could not stop the wars or depose the tyrant."We cannot stop the flow of negative energy," Tianlong mused, picking up on her train of thought. "But perhaps… we can introduce a different kind of energy. A counter-frequency. Something that would be poison to it."They returned to their research, but now they were looking for something new. They were searching for the magical equivalent of an antidote, a type of energy that was the antithesis of the fear, hatred, and despair the curse fed on.Their search led them to the most ancient and obscure texts in Tianlong’s memory, texts that spoke of the fundamental architecture of the universe. They learned of the two primal forces: entropy and creation, darkness and light. The curse was a manifestation of entropy, a force that sought to break down, to corrupt, to return all things to a state of chaotic, meaningless energy. Its opposite was the energy of creation. The energy of hope. Of order. Of selfless love."That is its poison," An-li whispered, her eyes wide with the enormity of the discovery. "The curse feeds on selfish ambition, on hatred, on fear for oneself. The antidote is the opposite: selfless action, hope for others, a love that seeks to build rather than to possess."The theory was sound, but the application was a monumental challenge. How could two isolated individuals on a mountain generate enough positive, creative energy to counteract the psychic poison being generated by an entire continent of warring, suffering people?"We cannot do it with a single act," Tianlong said. "It must be a constant, sustained effort. We must turn this mountain, this prison, into a beacon. A lighthouse of pure, creative energy that will shine out into the world along the same ley lines the curse uses to feed."The plan was audacious, almost mad. They would need to perform a continuous, complex ritual, a sustained act of high magic, for weeks or even months on end. It would require all of their concentration, all of their strength, all of their will. It was a siege in reverse. They, the besieged, would lay siege to the power of their jailer, slowly starving it, weakening it, preparing it for the final, decisive blow. The path forward was clear, and it was more daunting than anything they had yet faced.
