Chapter 48: THE AUDIENCE

625 Words
The climb took the better part of a day. The two rival factions ascended in a tense, watchful silence, their animosity temporarily superseded by a shared sense of awe and dread. They reached the summit plateau, the place where An-li had first been left as a sacrifice. The obsidian altar was still there, but the grim garden of bones was gone, swept away by Tianlong’s power. The air was clean and crisp, not heavy with menace.Waiting for them on the plateau were two figures. One was a woman with the unmistakable bearing of royalty, dressed in simple but elegant robes, her face serene and filled with a quiet, unshakable authority. Her hair was unbound, flowing freely in the mountain wind. General Kaelen fell to one knee instantly, his heart soaring. It was her. Princess An-li.The other figure, standing beside her, was a tall, imposing man with eyes of molten gold and an aura of such immense, ancient power that it was difficult to look at him directly. The Regent’s cultivators gasped, recognizing the nature of the power radiating from him. It was not the magic of a human. It was something far, far older. The Regent, An-li’s brother, stared at his sister, his face a mask of disbelief and fury. "You," he hissed. "You’re alive. What is this trickery? Who is this… sorcerer?"An-li did not look at her brother. Her gaze was fixed on General Kaelen. "General," she said, her voice clear and steady, carrying easily in the thin air. "You have served the Empire with honor in a time of great darkness. Your loyalty will be remembered."She then turned her cool, appraising gaze to her brother. "As for you," she said, her voice devoid of hatred, but filled with a cold, absolute authority. "Your time as Regent is over. You have betrayed your father, tormented your people, and brought the Empire to the brink of ruin for the sake of your own ambition.""I am the rightful ruler!" the Regent shrieked, his composure cracking. "You are a disgraced exile! I will have you executed for treason! Guards, seize her!"His personal guards hesitated, looking from their furious master to the impossibly powerful being standing next to An-li. They did not move.Tianlong stepped forward. He did not speak. He simply let a fraction of his true nature shine through his human form. The air grew heavy. The sky seemed to darken. The golden light in his eyes intensified, and for a moment, the ghostly, terrifying visage of the Heavenly Dragon shimmered around him.The Regent’s guards, including the powerful cultivators, fell to their knees, their faces ashen with terror. They were in the presence of a god, and they knew it.The Regent stumbled backward, his face a mess of sweat and fear. "What… what are you?""I am the Guardian of this land," Tianlong’s voice boomed, echoing with the power of the mountain. "And she," he said, gesturing to An-li, "is its chosen sovereign. She does not rule by blood or by conquest. She rules by merit, by will, and by the grace of the mountain itself. She is the Dragon’s Bride, not as a sacrifice, but as a partner. She is the Empress."The proclamation was absolute. It was not a political statement. It was a divine decree.General Kaelen and his men bowed their heads to the ground. "Long live the Empress!" they shouted, their voices filled with genuine reverence. The Regent’s own men, their loyalty shattered, followed suit, bowing their heads to their new, divinely appointed ruler. The Regent stood alone, his power, his army, and his ambition all turned to dust in a matter of moments. He looked at his sister, at the woman he had tried to destroy, now standing beside a god, her face calm and resolute. He had lost.
