Chapter 2: THE GILDED CAGE

709 Words
An-li followed the dragon's command, her legs moving on autopilot. The entrance to the cave was a gaping wound in the mountainside, and to step through it was to be swallowed whole. The air inside was surprisingly breathable, though it carried the same scent of ozone, mixed with something else—the dry, metallic smell of hoarded treasure and the faint, sweet scent of decay, like wilted flowers. The darkness was not absolute. As her eyes adjusted, she saw the source of a faint, internal light. Veins of raw, magical ore pulsed with a soft, golden luminescence from within the cavern walls, casting long, dancing shadows. The sight would have been beautiful, were it not so oppressive. The main cavern was a space of impossible scale, vast enough for Heiying to coil his full length with room to spare. And in the center of it all was his hoard. It was not the glittering mountain of gold coins and jewels she might have imagined. It was a graveyard of grandeur. Piles of exquisite silks, now rotting into dust. Stacks of priceless porcelain, cracked and gathering grime. Ornate furniture from forgotten dynasties lay splintered and broken. It was a treasure trove stripped of all its joy, a collection of beautiful things left to decay. It was the hoard of a being who collected things not for their value, but as monuments to loss.In a far corner, a waterfall of pure, crystalline water cascaded from a fissure in the ceiling, pooling into a perfectly clear basin before draining into the rock. It was the only source of vibrant life in the entire cavern.Heiying was waiting for her, coiled around a massive pillar of rock that rose to the cavern's ceiling. He gestured with his snout toward a smaller, adjacent chamber, little more than an alcove in the rock."That is your space," his voice echoed in her mind, flat and devoid of emotion. "There is water. The food you require will appear on the ledge once a day. Do not touch my treasures. Do not try to leave the cave. The mountain itself will crush you."An-li peered into the alcove. It was bare stone, save for a pile of what looked like discarded, but clean, furs for a bed. It was a cell, plain and simple. Her gaze, however, was drawn back to the main cavern. In the center of Heiying's coiled body, the golden light from the walls seemed to converge on something. It was a sword. The weapon was impaled deep into the stone floor, and wrapped around its hilt and blade were thick, pulsating chains of what looked like solidified shadow. The chains snaked from the sword and seemed to merge directly into Heiying's scales, binding him to the very heart of the mountain. The air around the sword hummed with a palpable aura of malice and sorrow. She realized the truth in a flash of cold insight. The lair wasn't just his home. It was his prison. The curse wasn't just in his mind; it was a physical anchor.Without thinking, she spoke aloud, her voice small in the immense space. "What is that sword?"Heiying's head snapped toward her, his eyes blazing with fresh fury. The temperature in the cavern dropped twenty degrees."You will not speak of it," he snarled, the mental command sharp enough to make her flinch. "You will not look at it. You will forget you ever saw it. That is your first lesson in obedience."He shifted his massive weight, the shadow-chains groaning as they pulled taut. A wave of agony washed over his features, so profound and swift that An-li almost missed it. He closed his eyes for a brief second, his breath hissing between his fangs. When he opened them again, they were colder and harder than the stone around them."Go to your cell, princess," he commanded, his voice a low growl. "Your presence is an irritation. Do not make it a fatal one."An-li retreated into the alcove, her heart pounding. She had seen past his rage, just for a second, and witnessed the prisoner beneath the tyrant. The curse was a physical torment, and that sword was its heart. And she, his bride, was now locked in this gilded cage with him, a fellow prisoner of the mountain.
