Chapter Seven: The Memory That Never Died

710 Words
The rain began to fall on the night Ethan's heart finally remembered what his mind could not. The candle flickered weakly on the windowsill, casting broken shadows along the cracked walls of his small room. His fingers traced the edge of another sketch — one of a woman with golden eyes and dark hair — the face that had haunted him for months. He didn't know why he kept drawing her. He didn't know why every stroke of charcoal against paper felt like he was chasing something he had lost. But tonight... something was different. The storm whispered through the cracks, carrying the faint scent of wet earth and something older... something ancient. The hollow was calling him back. Ethan's heart clenched painfully as he stared into the flickering flame. His breath trembled, his mind spinning with broken dreams and half-whispered names. Nayara... The name slipped from his lips without thought — soft, unfamiliar. But the moment he spoke it, the whole world seemed to shudder. His heart began to race. He didn't know that name. Yet it felt like the first truth he had ever spoken. The candle's flame flickered... Then died. In the breathless silence that followed, a single whisper brushed through the dark. “I’m still here...” Ethan stumbled back, his heart slamming against his ribs. The room was empty. But he felt her. Felt her sadness pressing against his chest. He grabbed his coat and stumbled out into the rain, his feet carrying him down the winding paths that led back into the forest. He didn't know why he was going back. He only knew that something was waiting for him. Something... or someone. The hollow greeted him in silence. The air was heavy with old magic, the trees bending beneath the weight of forgotten promises. His breath caught as he stepped beneath the ancient tree — the same place where he had died and been reborn. The earth beneath his feet was soft, damp. But he wasn't alone. The rain whispered through the branches, weaving through the shadows. And there... standing at the edge of the hollow, wrapped in the veil between life and death... was her. Nayara. Her golden eyes flickered beneath the rain, her body pale and half-faded — a ghost caught between two worlds. Her lips parted in a silent gasp as she saw him — as if she could not believe he had found her. “You remember me...” she whispered, her voice breaking through the night. Ethan's breath caught in his throat. He didn't know her name. He didn't know who she was. But something deep inside him ached. “I don't...” His voice trembled. “I don't know you. Nayara's heart splintered. But still... she smiled. “You loved me once,” she whispered. “And I... I loved you. The rain fell heavier around them, soaking through his clothes. The forest seemed to hold its breath, waiting. Ethan's heart pounded in his chest — a rhythm that had always belonged to her. He stumbled closer, his fingers trembling. “I don't... I don't remember. Nayara's golden eyes shimmered with unshed tears. “You're not supposed to". Her voice was barely above a whisper. “They made you forget... so you'd never come back". Ethan's chest ached, the pieces of his shattered soul trying to stitch themselves back together. “I don't know who you are,” he whispered. “But I feel you... here". His hand pressed against his chest, over the heart that was never his own. Nayara's lips trembled. Her heart. He carried her heart inside him. Even if his mind forgot her... his soul had never let her go. “You came back for me", she whispered, broken. “You always come back". Ethan's breath caught. His mind couldn't remember her face. But his heart did. “I don't know why,” he whispered. “But I feel like I've been searching for you my whole life". Nayara stepped closer — her ghostly fingers barely brushing against his face. Her touch was cold, weightless. “I would have given you the world...” she whispered. “But all I could give you was my heart". Tears slipped down Ethan's face without him.
