Chapter Three: A Heart Beneath Scales

522 Words
Ethan's breath came shallow as the serpent woman’s cold body coiled tighter around him. His heart thudded slower beneath her touch, but he still refused to pull away. The forest around them stood deathly silent, as if the world itself held its breath. Her golden eyes flickered in the dim moonlight, torn between hunger and a pain she couldn't speak. “You don't understand...” she whispered, her voice fragile. “No one ever stays... they all die in my arms". Ethan's fingers trembled against her skin, but he didn't let go. “Then let me be the first... to stay. Her lips parted, her breath catching in her throat — as if his words pierced something buried deep inside her. For a moment, she wasn't the serpent... she was Nayara — the girl who once walked this forest as a bride, cursed before she ever knew what love truly meant. The coils around Ethan loosened slightly, but the curse still lingered between them — like invisible chains pulling him closer to death with every second. “Why won't you run?” she asked, her voice breaking. Ethan's vision blurred, but his heart ached more for her than for himself. “Because no one... deserves to be alone forever". A shudder passed through her body, and for the first time in centuries, the serpent woman wept. Her tears were cold — like drops of rain against his burning skin. “I didn't choose this...” she whispered. “I didn't ask to be a monster". Ethan's breath caught. “I know". His words broke something inside her. Her coils slowly unraveled from his body, letting him fall weakly to the forest floor. She knelt beside him, her cold fingers brushing against his face — tender... afraid. “I can let you go,” she whispered. “If you leave now... the curse won't take you". But Ethan only smiled weakly, his hand still clutching her trembling fingers. “What if I don't want to leave?” Nayara's golden eyes widened, shimmering with something she hadn't felt in centuries — hope. “You would die for me?” Ethan's heart pounded painfully in his chest. “No... I would live for you. A sob broke from her throat, and for the first time, the serpent woman looked more human than monster. But the curse was still there — clawing at Ethan's soul. She could feel it. He could feel it. Time was running out. “Please...” she begged, her voice cracking. “You have to leave... before I kill you. But Ethan's fingers tightened around hers. “Then break the curse" Her breath caught. No one had ever asked her that. No one ever believed she could be saved. A long silence stretched between them, broken only by the distant whispers of the forest. “There's only one way...” she whispered finally. Her golden eyes shimmered with fear. “You have to give me something no one ever has...” Ethan's heart pounded harder. “What?” Her voice trembled. “Your love... without fear" even if it means losing himself?
