Prologue

Heaven had never known darkness before her. For thousands of years the celestial kingdom had existed untouched by shadow, suspended above creation in eternal gold and silver light. Nothing decayed there. Nothing bled. Nothing died. Angels did not tremble. Angels did not disobey. And angels certainly did not fall in love. Yet on the night Heaven began to collapse, the stars vanished one by one from the sky until only an eclipse remained above the holy kingdom. The omen spread terror through the celestial courts. Because the eclipse had appeared only once before. The night Hell was born. Luna stood at the center of the Hall of Judgment with chains around her wrists and grief inside her chest so vast she thought it might split her apart. The cathedral stretched endlessly above her, towering arches carved from white marble and moonstone, glowing rivers flowing beneath glass floors. Thousands of angels filled the sacred hall in silence, their wings illuminating the darkness like fractured stars. All of them watched her. Some with pity. Most with hatred. Because Heaven needed someone to blame. And Heaven had chosen her. Luna lifted her head slowly. At the top of the celestial stairs sat the High Seraph upon the Throne of Dawn, his expression carved from cold perfection. To his right stood Heaven's armies. To his left- stood him. Malach. The beloved son of Heaven. The angel every celestial warrior had once dreamed of becoming. His white wings stretched behind him like falling starlight, untouched by blood, untouched by ruin. But not untouched by pain. Luna saw it immediately in his eyes. He would not look at her. That frightened her more than the chains. Then the great doors behind the court exploded open. The sound echoed through Heaven like thunder. Several angels reached instantly for their weapons. Silver flames erupted along the cathedral walls. And through the ruined entrance stepped Elias. A collective shudder passed through the heavenly court. The creature from Hell. The destroyer. The monster whispered about in celestial prayers. He looked half-dead. Black blood stained his dark wings. Cuts covered his face and throat. One side of his clothing had burned away completely, exposing wounds that should have killed even an immortal being. Yet despite the blood, despite the ruin, despite Heaven itself waiting to condemn him- his eyes searched only for Luna. And the moment he found her, everything else ceased to exist. Luna stopped breathing. Elias took one step toward her. Then another. Angels immediately moved to block him. "Do not approach the prisoner," one warned. Elias smiled faintly. It was not a pleasant smile. "Heaven still mistakes chains for power," he said softly. His voice sent unease through the hall. Because once upon a time Elias had burned entire kingdoms for speaking against him. Luna remembered those stories. But she also remembered the man who had sat beside her beneath mortal rain and confessed quietly that he had never seen stars before meeting her. That was the tragedy of loving Elias. The world saw a monster. She saw the loneliness inside him. The High Seraph rose slowly from his throne. The air itself tightened beneath his power. "Elias of the Infernal Dominion," he declared, "you stand accused of trespassing upon sacred ground, slaughtering celestial soldiers, corrupting divine order, and igniting rebellion against Heaven itself." Elias looked unimpressed. "You forgot obsession," he replied. Gasps spread instantly. Luna shut her eyes briefly. Even now- even facing death- he could not stop provoking Heaven. The Seraph's gaze hardened. "You were offered redemption." "I was offered obedience." "You were born from corruption." Elias laughed softly at that. A dangerous sound. "And yet," he said, "your precious Heaven produced far crueler monsters than Hell ever did." The hall erupted in outrage. Several angels surged forward, but the Seraph silenced them with one raised hand. Then his attention shifted toward Luna. "You," he said coldly, "have poisoned both Heaven and Hell alike." Luna's throat tightened. For a moment she said nothing. Because part of her was still terrified this was somehow her fault. Not the war. Not the blood. But them. The way both men had unraveled around her. The way love had transformed them into something Heaven no longer recognized. Finally she lifted her chin. "I never asked them to destroy themselves for me." "No," the Seraph replied. "You merely made them wish to." Silence swallowed the court. Luna felt tears sting her eyes. Because that was true. She looked toward Malach then. Beautiful, loyal Malach. The angel who had once braided flowers into her hair in the celestial gardens because he could not confess his feelings aloud. The angel who smiled gently while hiding heartbreak behind holy perfection. He still would not look at her. And suddenly Luna realized why. If he looked at her now- he would break. The Seraph descended the stairs slowly, robes flowing behind him like liquid light. "Heaven cannot survive this chaos," he said. "Love has made monsters of you all." Elias immediately answered. "No," he said quietly. "Love made us honest." The words hit the court like a blade. Luna saw Malach flinch. The Seraph turned toward Elias. "Then renounce her." Everything stopped. Even the stars seemed to wait. Luna's heartbeat thundered painfully. Elias looked at her. Only her. The violence left his expression instantly. In its place came something infinitely worse. Tenderness. "I crossed Hell itself for that woman," he said softly. "I would burn eternity before renouncing her." Luna's tears finally fell. Somewhere in the court an angel whispered, "Blasphemy." The eclipse darkened overhead. Then the Seraph turned toward Malach. "And you?" he asked. At last Malach looked at Luna. The sight of him nearly destroyed her. Because there was no anger in his eyes. Only grief. The kind that came from loving someone too long in silence. Luna remembered dancing with him among celestial lanterns centuries earlier. Remembered his hand trembling the first time she touched his face. Remembered him pretending not to love her because Elias already did. Malach inhaled slowly. "Heaven gave us laws," he said quietly. His voice shook. "But she..." His eyes remained locked on Luna. "She gave us choice." The entire court froze. The Seraph's expression became murderous. "You would betray Heaven for her?" Malach smiled then. Small. Broken. Beautiful. "I already have." And Heaven shattered. The cathedral exploded in blinding light. Angels screamed as power ripped through the holy kingdom. Glass ceilings burst above them. Celestial fire rained from the sky. Columns collapsed as darkness and light collided violently through the court. Luna cried out as her chains broke apart. Then Elias reached her first. Always Elias. His bloody hands cupped her face desperately like he needed to memorize her. "You're crying," he whispered softly. She grabbed his wrists. "They're going to kill you." "They've been trying for centuries." Even dying, he made her want to laugh. That was the cruel thing about him. Then suddenly another hand touched hers gently. Malach. Luna looked up. For the first time that night, both angels stood beside her. Not enemies. Not Heaven and Hell. Just two men who loved the same woman enough to destroy immortality for her. The realization broke something inside her. "You can't do this," she whispered. Elias smiled sadly. "Too late." Above them, Heaven continued collapsing. The Seraph raised his hand. A final judgment gathered in his palm- bright enough to erase souls entirely. Luna's terror surged. "No-" But both angels stepped in front of her at the same time. Instinctively. Together. Elias glanced sideways at Malach. For one strange moment, they almost looked like brothers again. Then Elias said quietly, "In every lifetime..." Malach closed his eyes briefly before finishing: "We love her." The light descended. And Heaven fell. Elias reached her first. Always Elias. His bloodied hands grabbed her face desperately as chaos erupted around them. "You're crying," he whispered softly. Silver blood dripped from his lips. Luna clutched his wrists tightly. "They're going to kill you." "They've been trying for centuries." Even now, standing at the edge of eternity, he still sounded almost amused. Then suddenly- the High Seraph's voice thundered through the heavens. "Kill her." Everything stopped. For one impossible moment even the war itself seemed to fall silent. Then the angels moved. Fast. Terrified. Desperate. Not afraid of Elias. Not afraid of Malach. Afraid of her. Elias' expression shattered instantly. "No-" He lunged forward just as celestial warriors descended from every direction. Darkness exploded from him violently. Black wings tore through the cathedral air as he ripped through angels like unleashed wrath itself. Silver blood sprayed across the marble floors. Screams echoed through Heaven. But there were too many. Celestial chains erupted from the ground without warning, wrapping violently around Elias' throat, arms, and wings. He roared. The sound shook the heavens. Still the chains dragged him backward. Still Heaven restrained him away from her. Luna stumbled back as chaos swallowed the cathedral whole. Then suddenly- pain. A sharp gasp tore from her lips. Her body jerked violently. For one horrifying second she could not understand what had happened. Then warmth spread slowly through her chest. Luna looked down. A celestial sword protruded straight through her body. Silver light glowed around the blade, holy enough to erase souls entirely. The angel holding the sword stared at her in horror, his hands trembling around the weapon as though even he had not believed Heaven would truly order this. Blood spilled from Luna's mouth. The world became distant. Quiet. Her knees buckled weakly. "LUNA!" Elias' scream shattered the heavens. He fought against the chains with terrifying violence, black blood pouring from wounds ripping open across his skin. "LET HER GO!" The restraints only tightened harder. Luna collapsed backward- only for another body to catch her instantly. Malach. His arms wrapped around her with desperate gentleness as he lowered her against him. His face had gone pale. "No..." he whispered shakily. "No, no..." Blood slipped from Luna's lips onto his throat. The sword remained buried through her chest, glowing brighter with every passing second. Elias continued screaming somewhere behind them. The sound of his grief nearly broke the heavens apart. The second sword came down- and Malach turned at the last second, wrapping himself around Luna completely. The blade pierced straight through him back. And into her. Both of them gasped sharply. The sound that escaped Elias then- was not human. It was grief in its purest form. The sword protruded through Malach's chest now, both of them impaled together in each other's arms. Blood spilled from their mouths simultaneously. Luna stared up at him weakly. Tears blurred her vision. Malach smiled at her anyway. Even dying- he smiled gently. The same way he always had. "I'm sorry," he whispered. Blood slipped down his chin. Luna shook her head desperately. "No..." His trembling hand cupped her face. And for the first time in centuries, Heaven's beloved son finally allowed himself to love her openly. "I loved you," he whispered brokenly. "In every version of this life." Luna sobbed. Behind them Elias continued screaming against the chains restraining him, tears mixing with blood across his face. Watching. Forced to watch the woman he loved die in another man's arms. The cruelty of it nearly destroyed him. "LET ME GO!" he roared. The heavens trembled violently. Several angels collapsed from the force of his rage alone. Still they restrained him. Still Heaven held him away from her. Luna heard him. Even through the ringing in her ears- she heard him. Her Elias. Her beautiful monster. Crying. The sound shattered her heart completely. Weakly, she lifted one trembling hand toward him. Elias immediately lunged against the chains desperately. Silver restraints tore deeper into his flesh. "Luna-" She could barely see anymore. But she reached for him anyway. Because even now... even dying... she wanted both of them. Malach tightened his hold around her weakly. And then the floor beneath Heaven finally broke apart. The cathedral split open. The skies shattered. And suddenly they were falling. Malach still held her tightly against him as both of them plunged from Heaven toward the mortal world below. Wind screamed around them. Fragments of celestial light scattered through the darkness like dying stars. Above them, Elias broke free from the chains at last. Too late. His eyes met Luna's as she fell farther away from him. The look on his face- God. She would remember that grief forever. Luna reached toward him desperately through the collapsing heavens. One hand clutching Malach. The other stretching toward Elias. Trying to reach both. Trying to love both. Trying not to leave either behind. Elias dove after them instantly. Screaming her name. But countless angels seized him again before he could reach them. He fought until blood poured from his wings. Until his voice broke. Until Heaven itself shook from the violence of his grief. And still- he could not reach her. Far below, the mortal world waited. Cold. Dark. Human. Luna's vision dimmed slowly as Malach held her during the fall. Their foreheads rested together. Blood stained both their mouths. "I'll find you again," he whispered weakly. Tears slipped from her eyes. "So will he." Above them, Elias screamed her name one final time. Then Heaven vanished behind the eclipse. And the stars went dark.
