The Weight of a Crown II

Eanora wandered between the towering shelves of the royal library, her fingers brushing lightly across rows of ancient books. The faint scent of dust and parchment filled the air, and the quiet atmosphere felt almost sacred. She loved this place. While the rest of the palace focused on politics and royal duties, the library held something far more exciting...knowledge. Hidden knowledge. Secrets left behind by generations long gone. Most people found the oldest sections of the library difficult or boring. Eanora found them fascinating. Her eyes scanned the titles carefully as she moved deeper into the restricted section. The lantern light flickered gently against the tall shelves, creating shifting shadows along the walls. Finally, her attention caught on a thick leather-bound book partially hidden behind a row of scrolls. Curious, she pulled it free. Dust scattered into the air. The title, written in faded silver lettering, read: Runic Structures of the Old Kingdoms Eanora’s eyes lit up. “Oh, this looks promising.” She carried the heavy book to a nearby table and opened it carefully. The pages were filled with strange symbols with ancient runes drawn in careful patterns and diagrams. At first glance, they looked decorative. But Eanora knew better. She leaned closer, studying the first diagram. Three outer runes surrounded a central symbol. Thin lines connected them together like veins carrying energy. Her brow furrowed. “That’s not decoration.” She turned the page. Another diagram. Different runes. Same pattern. Her heart began beating faster. “These are instructions.” She grabbed a sheet of parchment and began sketching the runes quickly. Her mind worked rapidly, connecting patterns and shapes. “If this rune stabilizes magical energy…” she murmured quietly, tracing the symbol with her finger, “then this one must redirect it.” Another page. Another pattern. Her excitement grew. “These structures activate something.” She flipped through the pages faster now, absorbing the information as quickly as she could. Ancient civilizations had used magic differently from modern kingdoms. Their runic systems were complex, designed to channel powerful energy sources. At the center of one diagram was a name written in ancient script. Eanora translated it slowly. “Aether… Core.” She leaned back in her chair. An Aether Core was legendary—an ancient source of magical power strong enough to fuel entire cities. Most scholars believed they no longer existed. But according to the book… one might still remain. Hidden somewhere near the capital. Her heart raced. “If this is real…” she whispered. The possibilities were endless. Ancient ruins. Lost chambers. Forgotten magic. Eanora’s mind filled with excitement. But she wasn’t alone for long. “Princess.” The voice behind her made her jump. She spun around. Kyle Ardent stood in the doorway. His arms were crossed, and his training uniform was slightly dusty from the practice yard. Even at fourteen, he carried himself like a future knight that's confident and steady. “You disappeared again,” he said. Eanora smiled. “I prefer the word exploring.” Kyle walked toward the table and glanced at the open book. “You broke into the restricted section.” “I opened a window.” “That’s still breaking in.” She pushed the book toward him. “Look at this.” Kyle studied the runes for a moment. “Do you actually understand any of this?” Eanora grinned. “Yes.” Kyle shook his head slowly. “You’re unbelievable.” But he looked again at the diagram. “And what exactly are these runes supposed to do?” Eanora tapped the center symbol. “They activate something called an Aether Core.” Kyle frowned. “Isn’t that ancient magic?” “Yes.” “And probably dangerous.” “Definitely.” Kyle sighed. “You’re thinking about finding it.” Eanora’s smile widened. “Of course.” Kyle groaned. “This is a terrible idea.” But deep down, he knew something. If Eanora decided to search for something… she would find it.
