THE SURVEY VEHICLE was small and boxy. It held four seats, but they were closely crammed together and the roof was low. The top of Alun’s head brushed it as he climbed into the driver’s seat. All the controls were manual. This was a car you had to actually drive. Alun passed Cherry a hard hat and a pair of thick gloves. The tires were fat and there was plenty of clearance beneath the car to enable it to deal with rocky terrain. Two excavators had volunteered—begged, in fact—to come along.
