CHAPTER 2 - THE PUNISHER

723 Words
The air in the private vault of The Citadel casino was chilled to sixty-four degrees. Fabio Castellano stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, watching Chicago pulse neon below. In his charcoal Tom Ford suit, he looked like a Wall Street CEO closing a merger. Not a man who broke fingers for a living. Behind him, Marco trembled in a mahogany chair, wrists zip-tied—two percent skimming. In Fabio’s world, a leak was a leak. “Two percent,” Fabio said, voice smooth as his vintage Barolo. “In a casino, two percent is the difference between a good year and a legacy. You didn’t just steal money. You stole my time. And my time is the only thing I can’t replace.” “Don Fabio, please... I have a family.” Fabio took a slow sip of wine. His grip on Marco’s shoulder was steady, lethal. “I know. I’m paying for your daughter’s tuition. Or rather, I was.” He didn’t raise his voice. Didn’t look away from Marco’s eyes. “The balance sheet must always zero out. Since you took from the house, the house takes from you.” Fabio said quietly. He didn’t need to nod; his men already knew the protocol. When the silence finally returned, Fabio stood and smoothed his silk cuff. A stray drop of wine had landed there during the execution. He hated stains. “Clean this up,” he directed the room. “And prepare the dress. I have a dinner reservation at eight.” His right-hand man, Enzo Giovanni, paused. “Which one, boss?” “The white one. Size four.” Fabio stepped from the vault without looking back; Marco’s debt was officially settled. Now, his focus shifted toward a different account. Cold determination fueled his stride as he prepared to find Rachel. It was finally time to collect from her. He adjusted his silk tie as he departed—calm, handsome, and entirely untouched by the chaos behind him. His driver stood ready, holding the heavy car door open. On the leather seat lay a single white dress, delicately wrapped in tissue paper. The next phase of his plan was beginning. Size 4. Rachel’s measurements. Delivery was set for 4 PM. Fabio’s jaw tightened. He didn’t like the thought of her wearing it for anyone but him. Earlier that morning, Antonio Romano had arrived at the Castellano Estate in person, a move that signaled either great respect or absolute desperation. He wasn't there to settle his mounting debt with currency; he had run out of liquid assets long ago. Antonio offered the only collateral he had left that held any real value: his only daughter, Rachel Romano. He traded her like a pawn on a chessboard, offering her life as leverage to save his own. Fabio sat in his private study, the name "Rachel Romano" echoing in his mind. He didn't take Antonio’s word for it. Instead, he spent hours digging into her background, peeling back the layers of her sheltered life. When he found her photographs, the air in the room seemed to shift. She was strikingly beautiful—a classic, timeless elegance that radiated through the lens. But Fabio wasn't a man moved by mere vanity. As he scrolled through her files, he discovered she was more than just a pretty face. Rachel was exceptionally well-educated, having excelled at top-tier institutions. Even more impressive was the fact that she was fluent in five languages. Such a combination of intellect, youth, and grace was exceedingly rare in his world. She wasn't just attractive; she was a masterpiece of refinement. Fabio closed the file, his decision made. Rachel wasn't just a settlement; she was an acquisition he intended to manage personally. “Interesting,” Fabio murmured, a rare spark of intrigue igniting within him. For ten long years, he had remained a ghost in his own bedroom, swearing off women after the tragic loss of his late wife, Isabella. He had lived in a frozen state of mourning, but Rachel’s image finally cracked the ice. This wasn't mere attraction; it was the sudden, dangerous flick of fire. Looking at her, he felt a surge of cold obsession. He didn't just want her—he valued her as a prize worth claiming. Fabio was finally ready to break his decade of silence.
