CHAPTER 14 - FALL FOR THE DON

758 Words
Rachel turned on the wall lamp and scrambled into the massive bed, pulling the silk sheets up to her chin and squeezing her eyes shut just as the heavy oak doors creaked open. The room was silent, save for the rhythmic, heavy thud of Fabio’s footsteps. He moved with a predatory grace, but there was a heaviness to his stride that suggested the "emergency" at the casino had taken its toll. She felt the mattress sink as he sat on the edge of the bed. Her heart was a trapped bird, slamming against her ribs so loudly she was certain he could hear it. The scent of rain, gunpowder, and that same intoxicating spice filled her senses. For a long time, he didn't move. He simply watched her. “I know you aren't sleeping, Rachel,” he murmured, his voice a low, tired vibration in the dark. “Your pulse is racing. I can see it in your neck.” Rachel didn't open her eyes, but she couldn't hide the tiny tremor in her hands. She felt his cold fingers reach out, but instead of the harsh grip she feared, he merely tucked the blanket tighter around her shoulders. His hand lingered there, the heat of his palm seeping through the fabric. “It was a mess,” he said, speaking more to himself than to her. “Men trying to take what isn't theirs. I had to remind them why Chicago belongs to me.” He paused, and his voice dropped to a whisper. “But all I could think about was getting back here to see if you were still in this room.” He leaned down, his face so close she could feel his warm breath on her cheek. He didn't kiss her; he simply rested his forehead against hers for a fleeting, vulnerable second. “Stay with me, Rachel,” he breathed. “Not because of the debt. Not because of the gates. Just... stay.” He stood up and walked toward the dressing room, leaving Rachel lying there in the dim light, her eyes finally snapping open. She stared at the spot where he had been, her mind a battlefield. She was his prisoner, his "prize," and his obsession—but as she felt the lingering warmth where he had touched her, she realized with a start that she didn't want to run anymore. From the stillness of the bed, Rachel tracked his every move. The silence of the suite amplified the rustle of fabric as Fabio tossed his garments to the floor—the heavy thud of a belt, the soft sigh of a shirt. Then came the rhythmic, heavy tread of his footsteps heading toward the master bath. The pipes groaned slightly as he turned on the shower, the distant hiss of water filling the void. Rachel remained motionless in the dim light, her body stiff and her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She squeezed her eyes shut, concentrating on the slow, steady rise and fall of her chest, desperately trying to maintain the illusion of a deep, untroubled sleep. A moment later, Fabio stepped out of the bathroom and joined her. He didn’t turn off the lights; he simply lay down beside her in the silence. Thinking he had finally drifted off, Rachel eventually turned to face him. The silence of the room felt heavy as she whispered the words she wasn't brave enough to say while he was awake. “I hate you,” she breathed, her voice trembling. “I hate that I’ve actually started to fall for you.” She shifted closer, the warmth radiating from him drawing her in. She tentatively waved a hand in front of his face, watching for any flicker of his eyelids or change in his breathing. There was no response. Emboldened by the silence, Rachel studied the sharp lines of his features, her hand hovering just inches above his bare chest. “I’m not running anymore, Fabio,” she whispered to the shadows, her fingertips finally grazing his skin. Fabio didn’t stir, yet every word branded itself into his soul. To be confessed to by a saint—it shifted the very chemistry of his blood. The "Punisher" felt the ice in his veins thaw, replaced by a terrifying, newfound heat. He had spent his life as a predator, but in the silence of the room, her surrender became his ultimate undoing. For the first time, the man who held everyone’s fate in his hands felt entirely powerless.
