Chapter 5 – The Billionaire’s Assistant

Elena stared at the email three times before finally believing it. Congratulations. We are pleased to offer you a position at Wolfe Global. The words remained exactly the same every time she read them. And yet they still felt unreal. For a moment, she just sat at the small dining table in silence. Then she screamed. Not too loud. Just enough to startle her mother. “What happened?” her mother shouted from the living room. Elena jumped to her feet. “We did it!” she said, barely containing her excitement. A second later she was running toward her. Her mother looked alarmed until Elena shoved the phone into her hands. The older woman adjusted her glasses. Read the email. Then read it again. Tears immediately filled her eyes. “Oh, Elena…” The pride in her voice nearly broke Elena. They hugged tightly. For a few seconds, neither spoke. They simply stood there. Holding onto the moment. After years of sacrifice. Years of worrying. Years of wondering if all the hard work would ever be enough. Something was finally changing. That evening, Liam returned home to find both women smiling suspiciously. He stopped near the doorway. “Why do you both look happy?” Elena crossed her arms. “What if we don’t?” “You do.” His eyes narrowed. “What happened?” Their mother pointed toward Elena. “Tell him.” Elena tried keeping a straight face. Failed. “I got the job.” For a second Liam simply stared. Then he dropped his backpack. “No way.” “Way.” “No.” “Yes.” He rushed across the room and pulled her into a hug. “So you’re officially rich now?” Elena laughed. “That is not how employment works.” “It should.” “I agree,” their mother added. The three of them laughed. And for the first time in a long while, Elena allowed herself to imagine a future beyond just survival. Maybe things really could get better. Monday arrived far too quickly. Elena spent nearly twenty minutes deciding whether her outfit looked professional enough. Then another ten minutes changing it. Then another five changing it back. By the time she finally left the apartment, she was already running late. Her nerves weren’t helping. Her nerves weren't. The fact that she was about to start working for one of the most powerful corporations in the country made her even more anxious. The subway ride felt endless. Every stop made her more anxious. Every minute brought her closer to reality. By the time Wolfe Global came into view, her stomach was a complete mess. “You’ve got this,” she whispered. Then she stepped inside. Orientation occupied most of the morning. There were presentations. Policies. Introductions. Department tours. Enough information to overwhelm anyone. Elena spent most of her time trying to remember names. By lunchtime, her head hurt. “Overwhelmed?” A voice beside her made her turn. Maya. The woman she’d met during the scholarship event. Relief immediately flooded through her. “Thank goodness.” Maya laughed. “You look like you’ve been abandoned in the wilderness.” “I feel like it.” “Same.” For the next few minutes, they talked while eating lunch. The conversation helped. Everything felt less intimidating when someone else looked just as confused. Eventually, however, an HR representative approached. “Elena Hart?” She stood immediately. “Yes?” “Mr. Wolfe would like to see you.” The smile disappeared from her face. Maya’s eyes widened. “Already?” Elena swallowed. “Apparently.” The executive floor looked completely different from the rest of the building. Quieter. More elegant. More intimidating. Every detail seemed deliberate. The assistant outside Adrian’s office smiled politely. “Please go in.” Elena nodded. Then immediately forgot how to breathe. The office was enormous. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Manhattan. Bookshelves lined one wall. Modern artwork decorated another. The entire space radiated authority. And standing near the window was Adrian Wolfe. For a moment, he didn’t notice her. His attention remained fixed on something outside. The city perhaps. Or whatever billionaires thought about when staring dramatically through glass. Then he turned. And suddenly all of Elena’s confidence disappeared. There was something unnerving about him. Not because he was rude. Not because he was angry. Because he seemed impossible to read. His expression revealed nothing. His posture revealed nothing. Everything about him felt controlled. “Ms. Hart.” His voice broke the silence. “Good afternoon, Mr. Wolfe.” He gestured toward a chair. “Sit.” Elena obeyed immediately. Adrian moved behind his desk. Opened a file. Her file. And for some reason, that made her even more nervous. “Your academic record is impressive.” “Thank you.” “You graduated at the top of your class.” “Yes.” “You also worked part-time throughout university.” Elena blinked. He’d actually read her file. Thoroughly. “I did.” Adrian nodded once. Then looked directly at her. “Why?” The question surprised her. “Why?” “Most students focus on one or the other.” Elena hesitated. Then answered honestly. “Because I didn’t have a choice.” Something shifted in his expression. Not enough for most people to notice. But enough. “My family needed support.” Silence. Then Adrian closed the file. “I value honesty.” Elena wasn’t sure why that statement felt important. But it did. “Good.” A faint flicker of amusement appeared in his eyes. Gone almost immediately. Yet Elena caught it. And somehow it made him seem slightly less terrifying. Slightly. Over the next week, Elena quickly discovered that working with Adrian Wolfe was not easy. The man expected excellence. Nothing less. Every report had to be perfect. Every meeting required preparation. Every detail mattered. Mistakes weren’t tolerated. Not because he yelled. Because he noticed everything. And somehow that was worse. By Friday, Elena was exhausted. Completely exhausted. She had revised the same report three times. Double-checked every presentation. Reviewed every schedule. Yet somehow Adrian still found things she’d missed. “Page twelve.” Elena looked up. “What about it?” “The third figure is outdated.” She stared. Then checked. He was right. Again. “How do you even see these things?” The question slipped out before she could stop it. For a second silence filled the office. Then something unexpected happened. Adrian actually smiled. A real smile. Small. Brief. But real. “Practice.” Elena blinked. The smile disappeared so quickly she almost wondered if she’d imagined it. Almost. Across the building, Ethan leaned against the wall outside a conference room. Waiting. A few moments later, Elena appeared. Immediately, he smiled. “Elena.” She looked surprised. “Mr. Cole.” “Ethan.” “Mr. Cole.” He laughed. “We’re doing this?” “Professional boundaries.” “I already dislike professional boundaries.” Despite herself, Elena smiled. Ethan seemed incapable of taking anything seriously. The complete opposite of Adrian. Talking to him felt easy. Effortless. Natural. Which was probably why she didn’t notice Adrian watching from the other end of the hallway. His expression remained unreadable. But something unpleasant stirred inside him. The same feeling he’d experienced during the scholarship event. The same feeling he’d been trying to ignore. He knew that look. He knew Ethan. And he knew where interest could lead. A memory surfaced. Zara. Pain. Regret. Loss. The familiar anger followed. Adrian looked away. Telling himself that Elena wasn’t his concern. That this was simply business. That his decision had nothing to do with old wounds. Nothing at all. Unfortunately, even he didn’t believe that anymore. That evening, long after most employees had gone home, Elena remained at her desk. Finishing one final report. The office floor was nearly empty. Silence surrounded her. Eventually she leaned back and stretched. Only then did she realize another light remained on. Adrian’s office. Still occupied. She glanced at the time. Almost nine o’clock. Surely he wasn’t still working. Curiosity won. As she passed his office, she accidentally looked inside. And froze. Adrian sat alone behind his desk. Jacket removed. Tie loosened. A stack of documents surrounded him. Completely focused. Completely unaware that anyone was watching. For the first time, he didn’t look intimidating. He looked tired. Human. The realization surprised her. Because until now, she’d almost forgotten he was one. Then Adrian suddenly looked up. Their eyes met. Caught. Elena nearly died on the spot. “I’m sorry.” Why was she apologizing? She wasn’t sure. Adrian raised an eyebrow. “For?” “I—” Excellent question. For existing? For accidentally witnessing his humanity? For being awkward? “I was leaving.” A pause. Then Adrian nodded. “Good night, Ms. Hart.” His voice sounded different. Softer somehow. “Good night, Mr. Wolfe.” Elena walked away. Trying not to think about the strange flutter in her chest. Inside his office, Adrian watched her disappear around the corner. Then looked back at the report in front of him. Only to realize he hadn’t read a single word for the past thirty seconds. For reasons he didn’t want to examine. His attention remained fixed on Elena Hart. And for the first time since beginning his plan… Adrian felt something dangerous. Doubt.
