First day

The marble floors of the mansion gleamed under the morning sun, so perfectly polished they reflected every anxious step she took. Larissa adjusted her apron nervously, wishing she’d chosen flats instead of the heels that now seemed like instruments of her impending doom. “Deep breaths, Larissa. You can do this,” she whispered to herself, though her racing heart barely listened. Cleaning mansions wasn’t glamorous but bills didn’t pay themselves, and this job… this job could change everything. She reached for the grand double doors, hesitated, and then pushed them open. The scent of fresh flowers and expensive leather hit her instantly. Her stomach did a somersault. This was nothing like the cramped apartments she’d grown up in. “Good morning,” she said cautiously, stepping inside. A sharp click of shoes on marble made her spin. There, by the floor to ceiling windows, stood a man who looked impossibly calm and terrifyingly beautiful. Dark hair fell just above piercing eyes that seemed to slice through her. His tailored suit whispered power, authority, and danger in a single glance. He didn’t respond. He didn’t even glance at her. Yet the weight of his gaze made her shiver as if he could see straight through her. “Uh… I’m the new maid,” Larissa stammered, clutching her apron like a lifeline. “Larissa… I just started today.” Finally, he turned. His eyes were sharp, measuring, almost cold. “Do you know what you’re doing here?” His voice was smooth but carried a command that made her knees feel weak. “Yes… sir,” she replied, trying to keep her voice steady. “Good.” His one word acknowledgment sent a chill down her spine. She’d barely survived first impressions worse than this. The first task seemed simple enough: carry a tray of silverware to the dining room. Simple, she reminded herself. But as she rounded the corner, her heel caught on the edge of the rug. Crash. Silverware clattered to the floor. A vase teetered dangerously, then tipped, shattering into pieces. “Oh no!” Larissa froze, heart hammering. The billionaire appeared beside her in a blink, his expression unreadable. “I said the silver tray, not the crystal vase!” His voice was sharp enough to cut glass. Her stomach dropped further, how could one morning go so wrong? “I-I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean—” she stammered, scrambling to gather the pieces. He sighed, a sound that could have been irritation or something darker. “Be careful. This house is not for mistakes.” Larissa nodded frantically, cheeks burning. She had never felt so small in her entire life. And yet… in that moment, she noticed a flicker behind his cold eyes. A flash of curiosity? Something almost… human? Before she could dwell on it, a soft ding echoed from the mansion’s intercom. Larissa turned to see a message flashing: “We need to talk. Now.” Her heart skipped. Was it for her? For him? She didn’t know but she did know one thing: her first day at the mansion had just become far more dangerous… and far more interesting than she could have ever imagined.
