*Chapter 5: Luna Rises* We ran for hours. The forest blurred past us. My paws barely touched the ground. I wasn’t tired. I felt alive for the first time. Every muscle, every breath, every heartbeat was stronger. Kane ran beside me. Silver fur glowing under the moon. He looked at me, and I heard him in my head. “You’re faster than I thought, little wolf.” I almost tripped. Little wolf? “Don’t call me that.” His laugh rumbled through my mind. “Then keep up, Luna.” Luna. The word hit me different. The howls behind us faded. The shadows couldn’t keep our pace. Not when we ran together. Finally, Kane slowed. We reached a cliff overlooking a valley. Below us, firelight flickered. Tents. Wolves. Hundreds of them. “My pack,” Kane said out loud this time. His voice was rough from the shift back. He stood beside me now, human again, pulling a spare jacket over his bare chest. I realized I was human too. When did I shift back? I was wrapped in Kane’s old shirt. It swallowed me. “They’re waiting,” he said. I looked down at the valley. Dozens of wolves lifted their heads. Then one by one, they howled. Not a threat. A greeting. To me. “Why are they—” “Because you’re awake,” Kane cut me off. He stepped behind me, his hands gently landing on my shoulders. “Because the Moon Crystal chose you. Because you’re mine.” He turned me to face him. Blood was still dried on his cheek, his silver eyes softer than I’d ever seen them. “You fought today, Lena. Not as a human. Not as a scared girl. As a Luna.” My heart hammered. “I don’t even know what that means.” “It means you don’t run from wars anymore.” His thumb brushed my cheek. “You lead them.” A new howl cut through the night. Not from the pack. From behind us. The Shadow King stood at the treeline. Injured, but not dead. His red eyes burned. “This isn’t over, Moon Daughter,” his voice scraped the air. “I will have your blood. And when I do, this world burns.” Kane stepped in front of me, growling. But I put my hand on his arm. I stepped forward. For the first time, I wasn’t hiding behind him. “Try it,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. “But you’ll have to get through both of us. Through all of us.” I looked down at the valley. The entire pack stood now. Watching. Waiting. The Shadow King smiled, dark and cruel. “So be it. Enjoy your little pack, Luna. Enjoy your mate. War is coming.” Then he melted into the shadows and vanished. Silence. Kane exhaled and pulled me against his chest. His heart was pounding as fast as mine. “You shouldn’t have done that.” “Why?” I whispered into his shirt. “Because now he knows.” He pulled back, his hands framing my face. “He knows you’re not afraid anymore. And that makes you dangerous.” I looked up at him. “Good.” A slow smile spread across his face. The first real smile I’d seen. It changed everything. The ice in his eyes melted. “Come on,” he said, taking my hand. “They’re waiting to meet their Luna.” We walked down the cliff path together. Hand in hand. The pack parted for us as we entered the camp. Wolves bowed their heads. Men and women with silver eyes watched me with respect, with hope. An old woman stepped forward. She had white hair and kind eyes. “The prophecy was true,” she whispered. “The Silver Luna has returned.” Kane squeezed my hand. “Told you.” I looked at him, then at the pack, then at the moon above us. I wasn’t the lost girl in the forest anymore. I was Lena. I was a wolf. I was Luna. And I was finally home. Kane leaned down until his forehead touched mine. “Still scared?” he murmured. I shook my head. “Not with you.” “Good,” he whispered. “Because this is just the beginning.” Then his lips found mine. And this time, it wasn’t a claim. It was a promise. the end
