Chapter Two

A famous hockey player was visiting Danny's school today, it was all he talked about for hours. Being a hockey player had always been his dream, he was a rising star in his junior league until he was diagnosed. Even though he was no longer allowed to play, he never stopped loving hockey. He participated in every activity and never missed a match. Today was like a dream come through to him. he had been chanting, ranting, and making hockey signs since he woke up. At some point, I had to literally close my ears to get a second of silence. He wouldn't stop though, He sang louder instead. And now, he wanted me to be there. He wasn't going to play, he was going to sit by the sidelines and I didn't understand why he wanted me to be there. “It's going to be epic! Derek is going to be there! Derek is going to be there!” He sang, running around our cramped space. I didn't know who the hell Derek was, but I was genuinely happy for Danny. Anything that brought a smile to his face, could as well be the best thing in the world. “Let me get this straight,” I began to tease when he ran back to me. “You want me to close the flower shop, get on a cab and head to your school, just to watch you sit on a bench?” “No,” he said, shaking his head at me in a way that made me feel like our roles had been reversed. “ I want you to watch me get my hockey shirt signed by Derek,” I smiled. Leave it to Danny to make everything seem big. “Fine then, I'll do whatever you want as long as you're happy,” “That's the spirit, Girl,” I chuckled, reaching out to ruffle his hair, he dodged expertly. He was about to start running again, but suddenly stopped, his excitement fading almost immediately. “Do you think he'll sign my old jersey? Danny asked, looking down at his worn-out Jersey. "All my classmates have new ones. Mine’s old, his name is even peeling off the back,” I felt a sting in my heart. Not again, how long was he going to continue like this? I wish my mom's friend could come back faster. Marriage to her horrible son could at least enable me afford new clothes for my brother. I knelt down and took his hands. He didn't have to go through this, he deserved to have what his mates had. He was only eight for crying out loud. “Who's the smartest boy in the entire world?” I asked, forcing a smile. “I am,” he answered proudly, tipping his chin up. “Who’s heart is about to get a beautiful replacement?” “Mine,” he said, chuckling. “And why is that?” “Because," Danny said, about to tell me what we've rehearsed a couple of times. "with the kind of brain I got, the heavens thought I was already a grown man. So, they gave me the heart of a grown man, that's why mum went there to complain, they agreed and sent a unique replacement,” “Wow!" I said gleefully, clapping my hands like a fan girl. "You're very connected then, see? You've got connections in heaven, your mom's even up there. You're also one of the smartest kids there is, if Damian -” “Derek,” Danny corrected. "Damian is his best friend in the world, he's also a doctor," I didn't even know that, it was a mistake. “Right, if Derek can't see past the old jersey with his fading name, then he doesn't deserve to be your idol,” Danny stared at me for a bit, tapping a little finger on his chin. “hmmm....I think you're right. Thank you sis,” He pulled his hands from mine, and pulled me into a tight hug. I used a finger to wipe a stray tear, before it drops on his shoulder, trying my best to keep my mind blank. “But mummy would never come down from heaven, would she? Because she's dead right?” he whispered into my ear. I shut my eyes tightly and held him tighter. After a long minute, he pulled away and patted my back like an old man. “I'll go grab the jersey and hurry to school. Be good,” His tiny feet ran into the huge cupboard to grab his jersey while I remained on my knees. It was only after he blew me a kiss and ran out, I found the strength to get up and go on with the house chores. I was quietly setting the dining table when Stella, Mrs. Sterling’s daughter, walked into the room. She sighed dramatically as soon as she sighted me. “What a horrible way to begin a day,” she muttered, sliding onto the chair. I ignored her as always, my eyes focused on arranging the dishes perfectly. Spoiled was an understatement, she was a rotten brat who spent her days and nights doing absolutely nothing. I heard voices coming down stairs, the rest of the family was descending like dark gremlins. I hurried up. I had grown a thick skin to their snide remarks, but it'd be better if I don't hear them at all. “What are we having, Magdalene?” Mrs. Sterling barked as she took her seat. “Toasted bread and omelette,” I replied. As I spoke, My eyes unintentionally met Mr. Sterling's gaze, he was licking his lips in a provocative way. I quickly averted my gaze and it landed on Maxwell's, their son. He was glaring at me. I didn't even know what I did wrong this time. He was a mute, but he was worse than all of them put together. “I asked for spaghetti Bolognese,” Mrs. Sterling said, her tone snappy as usual. I heard her clearly when she said she'd have it for lunch, she tries to find fault in everything. “For lunch, ma’am, you said you'd have it for lunch,” “Are you sure I said that?” She asked. She definitely needs to pray for a retentive memory because she clearly doesn't have it. I nodded, she looked at me one more time before she dismissed me with a wave of her hand. I hurriedly left the dinning, grabbing my bag from the cupboard, I fled. Business was going well, probably because of the hockey legend that was visiting. The entire city was buzzing. A couple of girls bought flowers, till I almost ran out of it. I was happy I could at least cover my brother's post surgery expenses. The hospital wouldn't cover that, they made it clear. I didn't care though, they found the heart, a good cardiologist and they were covering surgery expenses. After a few hours, I heard some passersby screaming that the game was about to start and Derek would be arriving soon. I quickly closed the shop, the roads were completely empty so I decided to use the underground train station since I couldn't find a cab or bus. It seemed everyone was at Danny's school. The roads were even blocked, it's not as if the man still plays, I didn't understand what the excitement was all about. The platform was packed, lots of people were waiting in line with their train tickets. I had one, and I hated crowds. There was an empty consignment in the train, but no one was even approaching it. I was sweating on my forehead and the noise from so many people was almost making me dizzy, and as if that wasn't enough three girls who looked like cheerleaders stood beside me. They spoke carelessly about men and orgasms. My eyes were burning. Suddenly, one of them coughed loudly and began to laugh. “Can't Stella just get a room with her man?” She asked, pointing toward the far end of the platform. I followed her finger. Stella was standing in the far end corner of the station, pressed against a man, practically biting the man's lips off him. When she caught me staring, she smirked triumphantly and kissed harder. I sighed, and shook my head. She had always been like that, no boundaries, no privacy. After a few seconds, something clicked. That jacket! Jackson's jacket. I looked again, and I was right. It was jackson, the man I was promised to. Stella had her tongue all over the man I was promised to, on a train station. The girl who had coughed earlier looked from me to them, her eyes widening as realization set in. The other girls followed her gaze, their eyes widening. “Oh s**t!" Another one yelled excitedly. "Isn't that Jackson? The guy promised to an ex-nun?” “yeah," the last girl chimed in cheerfully"Isn't the wedding supposed to happen as soon as his mom comes back from Germany?” My chest tightened as they all turned to me at the same time. “You're the virgin and Ex-nun, right?” They chorused, their eyes gleaming with unhidden malice. I blinked, words stuck in my throat. “He said you're a loser and he's going to be your first everything. According to him, your mom's just doing yours a favour,” the first girl sneered. "Aren't you too old to not even have a first kiss? You should be lucky Jackson's going to be your first," I still couldn't form words, it's not like I loved him or anything, if anything, I saw him as a ticket out of the cupboard even though I knew marriage to him would be torture. I wanted to do it for Danny, he'd get a better room and new clothes. I needed to get out of here, my mind was in a daze. I needed to get out of the cheerleaders mean gazes and Stella's mocking eyes. I was yet to understand why Stella had always found a way to take away any glimmer of hope I had. I was about to move a bit further, but staggered instead. Strong arms caught me as I was about to fall to the ground, and I was pulled into a broad chest. When I looked up, I was drawn into the most beautiful hazel green eyes I had ever seen on a man's face. The face itself looked like it was painted by an extraordinary artist, and the dark hair was still wet as droplets of water still dripped down the owner's neck. And his lips. They were slightly parted. It seems he was saying something, I couldn't hear him. A thought immediately crossed my mind. Jackson was only going to take my first kiss over my dead body. Before I could talk my way out of my plan, I leaned forward, and captured those lips in a kiss.
