Three days had passed since Tyler's pathetic attempt to win Nova back. Three days of intense training, of learning to trust her wolf, of slowly understanding the bonds that connected her to five impossibly complex Alphas.
Tonight was the full moon.
"Your wolf will be strongest tonight," Orion had explained that morning. "It's the perfect time for your first full transformation."
Now, as the sun set and the moon began to rise, Nova stood in the mansion's private forest with her five Alphas surrounding her. She was terrified.
"What if I can't do it?" she asked, wrapping her arms around herself. "What if my wolf isn't strong enough?"
"She is," Zane said firmly. He stood directly in front of her, his dark eyes gentle despite his commanding presence. "Trust yourself, Nova. Trust her."
"We'll be right here," Asher added. "If anything goes wrong—"
"Nothing will go wrong," Elias said with quiet confidence. "I can feel her wolf. She's ready."
Kai had climbed a tree and was perched on a branch. "Plus, I've got my phone ready to record. Your first shift is definitely going on the private cloud."
"Kai," Orion said flatly. "If you post that anywhere, I will personally throw your electronics into the ocean."
"Buzzkill," Kai muttered, but he pocketed his phone.
Nova closed her eyes, feeling the moonlight on her skin. It was different tonight—warmer, almost alive. She reached inward, toward her wolf.
*Ready?* she asked.
*I've been ready for twenty years,* her wolf replied. *Let me out, Nova. Let me run.*
"Okay," Nova whispered. "Okay, I'm ready."
The transformation started as a tingling sensation under her skin. Then it became warmth. Then fire. Nova gasped as her bones began to shift, reshape. It should have hurt—she'd heard stories of first shifts being agonizing—but instead, it felt like coming home.
Silver light exploded from her body, so bright that all five Alphas had to shield their eyes. When it faded, where Nova Sterling had stood, there was now a wolf.
But not just any wolf.
She was magnificent. Larger than any regular wolf, with silver-white fur that seemed to glow in the moonlight. Her eyes were the same violet as her human form, but now they held ancient wisdom. And across her chest and shoulders, silver markings in the shape of stars and crescents marked her as something other—something divine.
For a long moment, no one spoke. They just stared.
Then Zane breathed, "Beautiful."
Nova's wolf preened at the compliment. She looked down at her paws—her paws!—and felt a surge of joy so intense she couldn't contain it. She threw back her head and howled.
The sound echoed through the forest, pure and powerful. And one by one, her five Alphas shifted and joined her.
Zane's wolf was massive, midnight black with eyes like bottomless pits. Asher's was battle-scarred, silver-grey with amber eyes that glowed. Elias's was sleek and white, radiating calm. Orion's was deep purple with stars seeming to swim in his fur. And Kai's was ice-blue, smaller than the others but crackling with barely contained energy.
Six wolves stood in the moonlight. Six souls bound by destiny.
*Run with us,* Zane's wolf spoke directly into her mind, and Nova realized she could hear all of them through the bond.
*Race you to the stream!* Kai challenged.
And they ran.
Nova had never experienced anything like it. The wind in her fur, the earth beneath her paws, the pure joy of running with her pack. Her mates kept pace with her—sometimes ahead, sometimes behind, but always close. Always protecting.
They raced through the forest, leaped over fallen logs, splashed through the stream Kai had mentioned. Nova felt more alive than she ever had in her human form.
This was what she'd been missing her whole life. This freedom. This power. This sense of belonging.
Eventually, they stopped in a moonlit clearing. Nova's sides were heaving, but she was grinning—could wolves grin? She felt like she was grinning.
*This is amazing,* she thought to all of them.
*You're amazing,* Asher corrected. *Look at you. A natural.*
*Your wolf is magnificent,* Elias added. *I've never seen markings like that.*
*That's because she's not just any wolf,* Orion said. *She's the Star-Moon Luna. The first in a thousand years.*
Nova looked at her reflection in the stream and startled. Orion was right—she did look different. Special. The star and moon markings glowed softly, pulsing in rhythm with her heartbeat.
*I can't believe this is real,* she thought.
*Believe it,* Zane said, his massive black wolf moving to stand beside her. *This is who you were always meant to be.*
Nova leaned against him, and he was solid, warm, safe. One by one, the other Alphas moved closer until they were all touching—a pack, a family, connected by more than just prophecy.
For the first time since Tyler's rejection, Nova felt complete.
Then Kai's voice cut through the peaceful moment. *Uh, guys? We've got company.*
Everyone's heads snapped up. Through the trees, Nova could see lights. Torches. And the unmistakable scent of unfamiliar wolves.
*How many?* Zane demanded, immediately shifting into Alpha mode.
*At least twenty,* Kai reported. *And they're surrounding us.*
*Shift back,* Zane ordered Nova. *Now.*
Nova didn't argue. She pulled on her human form, and the transformation was easier this time, smoother. Within seconds, she stood on two legs again, naked until Elias quickly wrapped a blanket around her. The other Alphas had also shifted, pulling on the spare clothes they'd stashed nearby.
"Show yourselves," Zane called out, his voice echoing with Alpha command.
The wolves emerged from the trees, shifting to human form as they did. They wore the insignia of the Council—the governing body of all wolf packs. At their head was an older woman with steel-grey hair and hard eyes.
"Alpha King Blackthorn," she said with a slight bow. "Forgive the intrusion."
"Councilwoman Thorne," Zane said coldly. "You're trespassing on my land. This better be important."
"Oh, it is." Her eyes fixed on Nova. "We're here for her. The one claiming to be the Star-Moon Luna."
Nova felt her five Alphas move closer, forming a protective barrier.
"She's not claiming anything," Asher growled. "She IS the Star-Moon Luna."
"So you say." Councilwoman Thorne's smile was sharp. "But the Council needs proof. We can't have every delusional she-wolf claiming to be a prophesied savior."
"Watch your tongue," Zane warned, his power filling the air.
"We mean no disrespect," another Council member said, stepping forward. "But surely you understand. If she truly is the Star-Moon Luna, she belongs to all wolf-kind. Not just to you five."
"She belongs to herself," Kai snapped. "And she chooses us."
"Be that as it may," Councilwoman Thorne said, "the Council has authority over all matters of prophecy and destiny. We're invoking our right to test her."
"Test her how?" Elias asked, his voice tight with concern.
"The Trial of Silver," Thorne announced. "An ancient test designed specifically for the Star-Moon bloodline. If she truly is the Luna from prophecy, she'll survive. If not..." She shrugged. "Then we'll know she's a fraud."
"Absolutely not," Zane said. "We're not putting her through some barbaric trial—"
"It's okay," Nova said quietly.
All eyes turned to her.
"Nova, you don't have to do this," Elias said.
"Yes, I do." Nova stepped forward, meeting Councilwoman Thorne's gaze. "If I'm going to be what everyone says I am, I need to prove it. Not just to them, but to myself."
"This trial is dangerous," Orion said, and there was real worry in his usually cold voice. "I've seen—"
"I know," Nova interrupted. "You've seen futures where I fail. But you've also seen futures where I succeed, right?"
Orion's jaw clenched, but he nodded.
"Then I'm taking that chance." Nova looked at each of her Alphas. "I can do this. I have to do this."
"When?" Zane demanded, turning back to Thorne.
"Tomorrow night. At the Council grounds." Thorne's smile was predatory. "I do hope she survives. It would be such a shame to lose another false prophet."
With that ominous statement, the Council wolves melted back into the forest, leaving the six of them alone.
"I don't like this," Asher said immediately. "It's a trap."
"Of course it's a trap," Kai agreed. "Question is, what kind?"
"The Trial of Silver is real," Orion said quietly. "Ancient. Deadly. It tests not just power, but character. Many have tried. Few have succeeded."
"What happens if I fail?" Nova asked.
The silence was answer enough.
"Then we won't let you fail," Zane said firmly. "We have twenty-four hours to prepare. We'll train, strategize, and make sure you're ready."
"Together," Asher added.
Nova looked at the moon—still full and bright above them. Her wolf stirred inside her, no longer dormant but awake and ready.
*Can we do this?* Nova asked her.
*We must,* her wolf replied. *Not just for us. For them. For all of them.*
Nova thought of Tyler's mocking face. Thought of every wolf who'd ever called her worthless, broken, useless. Thought of the prophecy that said she was meant to save their world.
"Tomorrow night," she said, "I'll prove I'm the Star-Moon Luna."
"You don't have to prove anything to anyone," Elias said gently.
"Yes, I do." Nova smiled, and it was fierce. "But not for them. For me."
As they walked back to the mansion, Nova's five Alphas surrounding her like a living shield, she felt her wolf settle peacefully in her mind.
Tomorrow would bring the trial. Danger. Maybe even death.
But tonight, she'd run free under the full moon with her pack.
And that was enough.
For now.
