Chapter 04: Five Wolves, One Destiny

1868 Words
Nova didn't know where she was going. She just knew she needed to get away from the staring eyes, the whispers, the overwhelming reality of what had just happened. Five Alphas. Five impossibly powerful, attractive Alphas claiming she was their mate. It was insane. Impossible. And yet, she'd felt it. That pull toward each of them, like invisible threads connecting her soul to theirs. She made it to the edge of the ceremonial grounds before a hand caught her wrist—gentle but firm. "Nova, wait." Elias. The healer with the kind green eyes. Up close, she could see the concern etched on his handsome face. "Please," he said softly. "Don't run. Not again." "I'm not running," Nova lied, even as her racing heart betrayed her. "I just need space. This is—it's too much. Five mates? A prophecy? I don't even know what that means!" "Then let us explain." Zane appeared on her other side, his dark eyes intense. "You deserve answers." "We're not going to hurt you," Asher added, moving to stand protectively at her back. "I swear on my life." Nova looked around. All five of them had surrounded her—not threateningly, but like a shield protecting her from the rest of the world. Even Orion, who seemed cold and distant, was there, watching her with those mysterious purple eyes. "Where's the fifth one?" Nova asked. "Kai?" "Right here, little Luna." She jumped as a sleek black motorcycle roared up beside them. The rider pulled off his helmet, revealing silver-white hair and ice-blue eyes that sparkled with mischief. Kai Frost in the flesh was even more striking than his image on the screens. "Sorry I'm late to the party," Kai said with a grin. "Had to make sure all Tyler's dirty secrets went fully viral. Oh, and I may have crashed his bank accounts. Oops." Despite everything, Nova felt her lips twitch. "You didn't have to do that." "Maybe not. But did you see his face?" Kai's grin widened. "Totally worth it." "Kai," Zane's voice held a warning. "This isn't the time." "There's never a wrong time to take down assholes who hurt beautiful women." Kai winked at Nova. "But fine. Serious time. Got it." Zane turned back to Nova. "My estate is ten minutes from here. Come with us. Let us explain everything properly. And then, if you want to leave, we won't stop you." "You promise?" Nova asked, hating how small her voice sounded. "I promise," Zane said. And something in his tone made her believe him. --- Zane's "estate" turned out to be a massive mansion on the outskirts of the city. As Nova stepped inside, she was struck by the elegant darkness of it—black marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, modern furniture in shades of charcoal and silver. "Welcome to Blackthorn Manor," Zane said, leading her into a spacious living room. "Please, sit." Nova perched on the edge of a leather sofa, feeling out of place. The five Alphas arranged themselves around the room—Zane in an armchair facing her, Asher standing guard by the door, Elias sitting beside her (but maintaining respectful distance), Orion at the window, and Kai sprawled in another chair with his legs over the armrest. "So," Nova said, wrapping her arms around herself. "Someone want to explain what the hell is happening to me?" Orion spoke first, his voice calm and measured. "A thousand years ago, there was a great war. Darkness threatened to consume the wolf world—a force so powerful that no single Alpha could stand against it. The wolf packs were on the brink of extinction." "Then she appeared," Elias continued gently. "The first Star-Moon Luna. A she-wolf born with the rare ability to bond with not one, but five Alphas simultaneously. Together, their combined power was enough to defeat the darkness." "But it came at a cost," Zane added. "The Luna and her five Alphas were bound so deeply that they shared everything—power, life force, even fate. If one died, all six would die." Nova's stomach dropped. "So if I die, they die? All five of you?" "Yes," Orion said simply. "And if any of us die, you die. The bonds work both ways." "That's..." Nova couldn't even find words. "That's insane! You barely know me! Why would you risk your lives for—" "We don't have a choice," Asher interrupted, his amber eyes intense. "The bonds aren't something we chose, Nova. They're destiny. The moment we saw you, our wolves recognized you. We couldn't walk away even if we wanted to." "And we don't want to," Kai added. "For the record." Nova's head was spinning. "But why me? I'm nobody. I don't even have a wolf!" "You do have a wolf," Orion said, moving closer. "She's just been dormant, waiting for the right time to awaken. Your bloodline—the Star-Moon line—is ancient and powerful. Your wolf won't emerge until all five bonds are in place. It's a safeguard." "A safeguard against what?" "Against those who would use your power for evil," Elias explained. "A Star-Moon Luna is incredibly powerful, Nova. In the wrong hands, that power could destroy the world rather than save it. So the magic itself requires you to bond with five Alphas—five protectors who will keep you safe and help you control your abilities." Nova looked at each of them. Zane, the powerful Alpha King. Asher, the fierce warrior. Elias, the gentle healer. Orion, the mysterious prophet. Kai, the brilliant hacker. They were all looking at her like she was precious. Like she mattered. It was overwhelming. "What if I don't want this?" she whispered. "What if I'm not strong enough?" Zane knelt in front of her, taking her hands in his. "Then we'll make you strong. That's what we're here for." "But the prophecy isn't just about us," Orion said, and something in his tone made everyone look at him. "The darkness is returning. That's why you've awakened now. The wolf world will need a Star-Moon Luna again. Soon." "How soon?" Nova asked, though she wasn't sure she wanted to know. Orion's purple eyes flickered with something ancient and knowing. "I've seen the futures. In most of them, the darkness comes within three months. And in most of them..." He paused. "We don't survive." The room fell silent. "But there are futures where we win," Kai said firmly. "Right?" "Yes," Orion admitted. "In the futures where all five bonds are complete, where Nova's full power awakens, we have a chance. A small one, but a chance." "Then that's what we'll do," Zane said with absolute certainty. "We complete the bonds. We train. We prepare. And we fight." "Together," Asher added, his hand moving to rest on Nova's shoulder. "All six of us." Nova felt tears prickling her eyes. Yesterday, she'd been nothing. A rejected, worthless Omega. Today, five of the most powerful wolves alive were telling her she was destined to save the world. It should have felt like a dream. Instead, it felt like drowning. "I need time," she said. "To process this. To understand—" "Of course," Elias said gently. "This is a lot to take in. We're not asking you to decide everything tonight." "But we are asking you to stay," Zane said. "At least for now. Let us protect you while you figure things out. The moment the other packs realize what you are, you'll be in danger. Everyone will either want to use you or eliminate you." "Cheerful," Kai muttered. "It's the truth," Orion said coldly. "She needs to know what she's facing." Nova closed her eyes, trying to slow her racing thoughts. She could leave. Walk out right now. Go back to her small, simple life. Except that life was gone. Tyler had destroyed it. And even if she ran, these five men would be bound to her, would die if she died. She was trapped. Not by them, but by fate itself. "Okay," she said finally, opening her eyes. "I'll stay. For now. But I need my own space. My own room. I'm not—" She felt her cheeks heat. "I'm not ready for anything... physical." "We wouldn't dream of it," Elias assured her. "You set the pace, Nova. Always." "Though just so we're clear," Kai said with a grin, "when you ARE ready, I call dibs on—OW!" Zane had thrown a pillow at his head. "Inappropriate." "What? I'm just saying—" "Kai," Asher growled. "Shut up." Despite everything, Nova found herself laughing. It was small, shaky, but real. And the way all five of them looked at her when she laughed—like she'd given them the world—made something warm bloom in her chest. Maybe this could work. Maybe. "So," she said, "if we're doing this, I need to know more about each of you. I can't bond with strangers." "Fair," Zane said. "What do you want to know?" Before Nova could answer, her chest suddenly flared with warmth. Not pain—not like the rejection mark—but something else. Something... alive. She gasped, pressing her hand to her heart. All five Alphas immediately moved closer, concern written on their faces. "What's wrong?" Asher demanded. "I don't know, I—" Nova's words cut off as the warmth spread through her entire body. Her skin began to glow with a faint silver light. "What's happening to me?!" "Your wolf," Orion breathed, his eyes wide. "She's waking up." The light grew brighter, and Nova felt something inside her shift. Something that had been sleeping her entire life was stirring. She could feel it—a presence in her mind that wasn't quite her but was still part of her. *Hello, Nova.* The voice was feminine, ancient, and powerful. Her wolf. "Oh my gods," Nova whispered. "She's real. She's actually real." "What's she saying?" Elias asked softly. Nova closed her eyes, focusing on the voice in her mind. *They are ours,* her wolf said. *Our mates. Our protectors. Our destiny. Accept them, and we will be complete.* "She says..." Nova opened her eyes, looking at each of the five Alphas in turn. "She says you're ours." The room erupted in reactions—Kai whooped, Asher grinned, Elias smiled warmly, and even Orion's cold expression softened. But it was Zane's reaction that caught Nova's attention. His eyes had shifted to his wolf's—completely black—and he was staring at her with such raw intensity that it stole her breath. "Say it again," he commanded, his voice rough. "What?" "Say we're yours." Nova's heart raced. But with her wolf awake, present, she felt braver. Stronger. "You're mine," she said. Then, looking at each of them: "All five of you. Apparently." "Damn right we are," Kai said with a grin. And for the first time since this insanity began, Nova thought maybe—just maybe—she could do this. But as her wolf settled back into sleep, exhausted from her first awakening, Nova didn't notice Orion's expression darken. Didn't see the vision flash across his eyes. The darkness was coming. And it was coming for her. --- **End of Chapter 04**
