f**k a plan, did this zombie just really say my name?
I stand there frozen staring at him on his knee with his palms up. “How do you know my name?” I demand holding out my sword once again. He points to my hip and when I glance down I see my radio clipped there. “My radio?” he nods.
He could understand everything then too! That means he knows that I told Jack about him and there are others out there. He knows I lied to them about him as well. He knows everything. All of a sudden my eyes drift to the water bottles sitting beside my pack and panic fills me. “Where did you find those?” I demand pointing at the water jugs just behind me.
He seems to struggle for a moment before answering. “AhTHERED.”
“Gathered? How?” I guess the gurgled word and demand for more answers.
“Oo ill” he says. Oh I'll. No…kill maybe?
“No kill? You didn’t kill them? Did you turn them?” He shakes his head no. “Did you take these from other humans?” He shakes his head no again and I relax. The tension in my shoulders ease and slup over with relief. He found this water himself… for me. I try not to think about it too much but another question comes to mind.
“Why me? Like why are you not going to eat me? Haven’t eaten me?'' He looks at me for a long moment and I think he is saying something to me but he just shrugs his shoulders. I stare at him in shock, he shrugged, so nonchalantly. For some reason seeing him make these few human gestures made it look… cute and I redden.
No, no, no, I can’t have a crush on a zombie, on him! He seems to notice my reddening face and smiles shyly at me, the corners of his black lips lifting up while thankfully his mouth remains closed. That disgusting mouth has been on my most private parts and his tounge… I flop down on the bed, letting my sword come to rest between my thighs.
I have to get him to the other colony. Squaring my shoulders and taking a few deep breaths to get rid of my redness and look at him again. “Okay, because you can understand me, we need to get to a colony. You are a cure. We can’t go to mine because, well they will kill you. Are you willing to help?” He stares at me for some time, unblinking and seemingly thinking before he nods. My shoulders relax and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
“Is it safe to leave this house?” He frowns slightly before seemingly reluctantly nodding. “Good.” I say and start to gather my things. I have to get him over to the other colony before Jack comes for me. While I am gathering food from the kitchen, ignoring the death so near by that I have to plug my nose, I see something shiny catch my eye on top of the refrigerator. Hope blooms in my chest of what it could be but I don’t dare hope. That is wasted in the apocalypse.
Dragging a chair over I attract my friend who stands in the kitchen doorway leaning against it with his arms crossed. I can’t help but notice how human that pose is. Once I have the chair dragged over I step up on it and take a look at wants on the fridge. A smile spreads across my face at the sight of a box of opened bullets. These must be the bullets for the gun I found earlier. God I hope it is.
Grabbing them I get down from the chair and take one out looking at it. This earns me a low growl from Zombie… Bie? I test the name out in my head and decide I like it better. It’s shorter and now I won’t get him confused when I am talking about zombies and him. “Oh hush.” I say, eyeing him. He still remains unmoving in the door frame with his arms crossed and I notice that his shoulders are round and his arms bulge muscle in this flexed state. If he lips weren’t black and his eyes weren’t–
I squint at him trying to get a better look and his eyes look less milky white and more clouded but the under lining color doesn’t show through and it might be my imagination but his lips– they look more purple than black. “You are changing.” I realize again. His eyebrows shot up in response and the growl disappears from his changed lips. I watch as he blinks a few times slowly but faster than before.
Does he know that he is changing? Does he feel it? After a moment of us just gawking at each other I take the box bullets and then grab the shotgun nearby and load it. Just one round to see if it will fit. The sound this gun will make will attract more zombies so I will only use it as a last case scenario. The bullet slides into the chamber perfectly and I keep it in there just in case.
Bie makes a sound that is a cross between annoyance and a huffed growl before turning away to head to wherever. I stay in the kitchen packing the bullets and the canned food. Before I am done my pack is full to bursting and I am forced to leave the remaining food behind. I will have to mark the door to let others know there is food but that requires going outside. Bie says it's safe but still a part of me is reluctant to move on.
Once I have everything together I take one last look at the kitchen and sigh heading to the living room. There I am meeted by Bie who stands with his back towards me staring at the couch shoved into the broken window. Seeing this only reminds me that he did that to keep me safe from the other zombies and he got an umbrella when I asked. Realization dawns on me when I come to terms with the fact that he has gotten me everything that I have asked for. Water and – I eye him, that vending machine was super out of place on that roof, perhaps he got that for me too.
He is smarter and has been smarter than I realize, this whole time! I walk up to him and stopping beside him. Grabbing my packs straps and look up at him. “Ready to go?”
He nods and moves not for the couch like I would have thought but the front door. He opens it with ease tuning the handle and I realize that it’s not unlocked. I never checked to see if the door was unlocked or not. I feel stupid. The evening sun shines through the open door and I follow Bie out, only noticing one zombie meandering about. Before I can decide to kill it or run it shuffles rather quickly away from us. Well that works too.
Heading out, Bie and I walk for a while not saying anything and not running, just walking. It almost feels normal to me, like he is another human walking with me, like we done this before. The other difference is every so often I hear his foot drag on the ground and my heart speeds up at the memory of him in full zombie mode. Clenching the hilt of the sword at my waist I steady myself each and every time but after hours of this he never acts for even grunts.
Once the sun is down I head towards a house and jump on the roof with a lot of difficulty. My muscles are stiff in my legs from running those two days and I am really feeling it now. As I pull myself up on the roof I feel warm hands touch my backside pushing me up. Using the help I push up and put my knee on the roof and then crawl so that my whole body is on the roof now. Collapsing on my stomach I breathe in the still warm roof's scent.
It smells of asphalt and soil– wait was Bie’s hand just on my ass? I redden thinking of the largeness of them and how warm they felt. Wait, wait… WAIT a second! He is warm. Pushing myself upright I turn to see him sitting beside me with his legs folded leaning on his back hands. “You felt warm!” I shout at him as if he doesn’t know.
He blinks at me before sitting up a bit and brings his hands in front of him. He places a hand to his cheek but drops it shrugging. “A Shrug? That’s it Bie? You–” I reach out toward his arm, grabbing it and feeling the warmth there. “You are warm! You must be tuning human. This is amazing. You are amazing. I throw my arms around his neck, hugging him tightly, noticing as well that he does not smell.
Human, he is turning human. “f**k!” I panic, pulling away from him. He whimpers as I let go and I drop back on the balls of my feet. “What if you turn human before we get to the colony and they don’t believe it. They will properly think I am just trying to get in to steal.” I sigh, dropping down to my butt and look at Bie. He doesn’t smell, no cuts or missing parts of him; the only thing that marks him as a zombie is the purplish lips and clouded eyes.
They have to believe me…but do they really. They could think I am crazy. This plan was f****d from the begining. f**k this plan. I fall on my back throwing my arms over my eyes. f**k this plan.
“R-EN.”
I lift an arm up and peek at him with one eye. “Yes?” He shifts over to me and gives me a look that I can only describe as sensual. “What?” I ask through a reluctant smile. Bie lowers himself on his elbow slowly to me and I pull away slowly. “Bie.” I warn.
“REN” he counters far more fluidly than before. Should I give in? I know what he wants but I don’t know if I can just give it to him like that. Suddenly my dream for before roars through my head and I blush. Bie takes that as a yes and moves one of his hands to rest on my upper thigh. His hand is still large and warm, almost human-like but I can’t do it, I just can’t.
“No Bie.” I whisper barely audible to my own ears but he stops and withdraws his hand. I feel bad because he shrugs and lays down on the roof with his hands behind his head. I watch as he closes his eyes content. I panic for a moment not sure why, I don’t owe this man anything… well maybe I did but we are even now. “Are you mad with me?” I ask in nothing of a breathless whisper. He grunts and rolls over resting his head on his folded arm and rests his eyes squarely on me.
“No” he says clearly, staring his clouded eyes into my soul, seeing me but not really seeing me. I swallow my eyes wide and locked with his.
“Yep I said no, but are you mad at me?” I ask again.
“No,” he says flatly and clearly.
“You are not like me?” I ask again just to be clear. He shakes his head no and then closes his eyes. “Are you going to sleep?” I ask stupidly.
“Yes” he says deeply and clearly, spooking me. I relax a bit, ignoring the stir it made in my stomach and close my eyes against the night sky trying to sleep. It takes a long time for sleep to grab a hold of me but when it does I dream of him, of Bie, touching me, kissinging me, creasing me. When I awake in the morning it's to the warmth of the sun and the feeling of being held. I snuggle closer to that feeling before I realize it’s Bie.
His arm is drap around me and I am snuggling into his chest. He is warm all over and hard and soft in all the right places. I don’t bother moving until I hear a growl escape his lips, throwing my heart into a wild frantic beat.
