I pretend to sleep for hours and hours before I hear the zombie leaves. I am so scared to open my eyes and see it, so I just lay there for a few minutes listening. The only sound I heard was a thud when my zombie left and the other zombies below moaning and shuffling. It’s night time now and it will be hard to see but this will be the only time I have to get away. Getting up slowly so as to not make a sound I head over to the side of the building where the ladder is.
Looking down I see one maybe two zombies there, okay. I walk over the edge where my sword is and see a few there too. Maybe 10 or so, but it’s hard to see. Taking a deep breath I find my resolve. I really hope no zombies are in the building. I will have this one and only chance to climb down and run to my sword. Then I will have to run as fast as I can to the colony. I will of course have to take breaks as rest, the tip will be a few days at least.
Okay, I look down and grip my pack straps. I can do this. Swinging a leg over the edge of the building I find the first rail and then I grip the edge and swing my other leg over. I move down as quickly as possible and hope the dried blood doesn’t attract any zombies. Once I am midway down I look down to locate the two zombies I saw earlier. They haven’t moved toward me which is good and I climb the rest of the way down. With a thub I am on the ground.
My heart is racing in my throat as I run towards the entrance of the ally. When I break into the opening some zombies see me and start towards me but I don’t stop until I am jumping over the circle of dead ones that surround my sword. Picking it up I run down the street slashing a zombie in half as it comes before me. It’s dark and I can hardly see but I don’t let that stop me. Once I am sure I have run a mile or two down the road I climb up on an awning and rest.
Not many zombies were out and I was thankful. I only had to kill a dozen or so. I drink some water I packed in my canteen and look out into the darkness. I hear a zombie stumbling around down below me somewhere but I am not looking for that zombie. I am on the lookout for my zombie, and I am scared that he will find me and end me for running away. That or turn me into his zombie girlfriend. I shudder at the thought.
When I awake it’s morning. I didn’t mean to dozen off but here I am, kinda well rested and ready to move forward. I take in my surroundings and when I only see two zombies below me I jump down and kill them. They both fall quickly and I begin my run again. Running in the day time is more preferable to night. The nights I can’t see anything and now I can avoid zombies just by out running them. I am about to stop and rest when I hear a good awful sound.
The scream comes in deep and guttural, sending shivers down my spine and to every nerve ending I possess. The same scream I heard when Jacob was killed by that zombie years ago. The sound comes from far behind me and I somehow know that that is him, my zombie. He has returned to see that I have left. I push myself to run further and further away from that sound to my colony and pray he isn’t following my scent. f**k, he most likely is.
I am out on the outskirts of town and jump into a ditch. I am lucky there is some standing water in it so I use the mud to cover my body. I wipe it on my pack and sword just in case and finger comb it through my hair, finishing off with my face. The hot sun now feels good on my sun kissed skin, who am I kidding, my sun burnt skin. Even now the sun is starting to set and I have run the whole day.
I start to run again, wanting to get as far away from my scent as possible and when darkness envelops me I climb on top of a house roof and rest. My adrenaline filled run disappears as soon as I reach the top and I collapse in exhaustion. I am about a day out I think from my colony. I hope and I pray that I am not leading that zombie to them. Maybe I should make a deture to make sure. That being decided I fall asleep and wake up in the early hours of the morning the mud now dried cakes on my skin.
I drink some water and look out at the homes around me, all abandoned, all once filled with life. My heart hurts for all the lives that we lost and will lose to the zombies. No one thought that blind, stupid stumbbling zombies could ruin the world as they have but here we are in the apocalypse. I look around for my zombie and relief floods through me when all I see is normal ones. He isn’t here. The mud coating my scent must be working.
Dropping off the roof I land with weak knees and collapse onto the ground. Normally I can find my footing but now with my legs sore I feel weak. More than weak, I feel vulnerable. I need to be able to run from the normal zombies if I don’t want to be eaten and my sore legs are not helping. Getting up I try to ignore the ache in my legs, and back and walk slowly around the home looking for any opening that could suggest that a zombie was inside.
Once I have circled the house and found no open doors or even windows I rip off another part of my dress and wrap it around my hand. Please let there be pants inside. I hit the window only for it to not shatter but send more pain through my body, now my hand hurts. Great it has double-paned windows. I reach in my pack for a knife and well I begin stabbing the window. What else can I do?
The window cracks after the fifth or fourth time hitting it but nothing else happens. Jake normally does this. I just climb. I look around the overly grown abadation yard for anything to throw at it and see a cinder block on the edge of the porch. Yes. I grab it quickly and throw it at the window. Finally it breaks and I climb inside, nicking myself on the shards of glass sticking out from the window on the inside of my thighs.
Ignoring it, I head to the kitchen to find food. Once in there the smell of rotten flesh overtakes me and I see a woman, man and– child dead on the floor. All of them are very decomposed and have massive holes in the head. Next to the man is the shotgun he must have used and I pick it up. Hopefully I can find bullets in this house. I don’t touch the fridge. I know nothing but mold and gunk is in there now, where once there was food, and head to the panty.
I am lucky today. I found canned food! Excitement thrills through my body, restoring some life back to it. I am not bothered by the bodies as I have seen much fresher half alive ones wandering around outside. Plus these are not the first day I saw a dead body was when I shot my husband, well it was through a zombie, but still. I killed him.
I go ahead a search for a can opener in the kitchen draws and on the third one I open I find one. Once I have my can of food opened I notice that it’s creamed corn. Gross. I hold the can up to my lips and tilt it and my head backward. The texture that hits my tongue is gross and appalling but I push through it. This is food. I need this. I tell myself begrudgingly.
Once I have the can of creamed corn knocked down I gather what I can fit in my pack and head to where the rooms should be in the house. I don't feel bad walking through this house, even though I feel bad for the lives lost in the kitchen. It looks like they had a good life, well until they didn’t. So many pictures line the walls of their happy faces and I can tell there was joy filling this house and even filling the remnants of it.
Lots of people chose that way out, there is not the same in that but the child would not have understood. That part gets me. They could have given up that child but didn’t. I shake my head and continue on. They are dead, push on. I see an open door that looks like the master bedroom and head to it. I happily open the closet and find a shirt and bra. YES! And pants. I am even more lucky when they fit, but the bra. So I find a sports bra and use that instead.
I toss my old dress in my pack, I can use it for rags or anything really when I hear shuffling. s**t was that family not really dead or are they undead? I pause and listen carefully and it sounds more like footsteps to me now. I panic, is this my zombie? Another one? A human? All the thoughts race in my head when a dirty white haired zombie comes into the room where I am at. I lift up more sword ready to fight. I don’t care if this is my zombie, I will not be tapped again.
Once I have my sword lifted I run towards the zombie and swing at its head. He ducks quickly and my sword misses him completely and lodges itself into the door frame. I quickly try to pull it out only to have the zombie tackle me back and to the ground. I hit my head hard, losing the grip on my sword and leaving it lodged in the frame. f**k. I kick my legs up to the zombies chest to gain as much room as I can between me and its mouth.
The zombie grabs one of my legs and snarls at me. Ignoring it I kick him squarely in the chest. The zombie makes a pained sound but lets my leg go. I shuffle backward, not bothering to turn around and glare at the zombie, my zombie. He found me.
I watch as he holds his chest as if he is in pain and he is looking at me, no glaring at me. My eyes widen at the expression on the zombie's face. He made an expression! I– I can’t even begin to process this information. Zom– zombies don’t do that! What the f**k is going on?
He advances toward me in a crouch, crawling like maneuver and my blood runs cold. I just pissed off this zombie who saved me and thus far hasn’t eaten me. My time is up. Once he is within reach of me he grabs my legs pulling me quickly to him. I don’t have time to react before my back and head slam into the ground making my head pound and vision blur.
No, no, no, no, I can’t die like this. I just can’t. I try to kick him but the pain at the back of my head is to much and my vision starts to become black at the corners. I blink rapidly to try and rid it but it doesn’t work. The darkness only closes in on me and the last thing I see and hear is my zombie's growl and his annoyed face before I black out into nothingness.
