It’s just beginning to lighten outside but the zombie still doesn’t leave. Maybe he leaves every other day or so… Or maybe it’s smart enough to know that I am not asleep. I am worried that this zombie is smarter than I realize and it worries me even more that more zombies can be as well. I now feel like I have to tell the colony somehow… f**k, I forgot about my radio. I have been scared to radio out with the zombie but I know Jack and the others must be waiting for me.
“Jack?” I whisper in the radio and double check the volume to make sure it's low. The zombie is pacing around the room and looks well like an amileless zombie.
“Copy.” Jack whispers back. “What’s your location?”
“Tower, at least thirty stories up.” Silence rings through allowing the zombie’s shuffling to echo off my rapidly beating heart.
“We can’t make it to you. You are the one who scales buildings.”
“I know, I just need to tell you about a zombie I found…” I take a deep breath and tell him almost everything, not the dry ass p***y eating that's for sure.
“He can jump two stories?”
“Or climb. I don’t really know all he does is keep me trapped here and whimpers.”
“Sounds like a dog. Maybe they are getting smarter as you stay and this is a trap.” I think of what he is saying and he could be right. That could be why the zombie leaves every so often to scout for people who will come to me… it doesn’t explain the p***y eating though.
“If I can get out will you guys be able to meet me near the tower?”
“Yes but not too near we will keep our distance. If the zombie is smart we don’t want to end up dead or one of them.”
“Understood.” I respond with as a goodbye and look up only to lock eyes with the zombie. Panic settles in my gut. Did the zombie understand me? God I hope not now I fear for Jack and the team, Erica, Nick… I shake those thoughts away before they can settle and smile at it. If this is a smart zombie then I have to treat it like… a human.
Getting up I slap my hands together but get no response from the zombie. It’s not even whimpering, not going to lie, him quite is far creepier than him whimpering. At least I know he’s my zombie– nope. Not my zombie, not my pet, just a problem. “Okay” I say to it “I will need food soon.” It just stares at me sending shivers down my spine. “Can you at least whimper?” I ask in hopes to get back to the slight normalcy that we have created.
Just thinking that makes me shake my head. I walk over to the balcony and that earns me a grawl from it. I ignore it somehow, comfortable in knowing it won’t attack me. When I look down I see the same dirty pound that I saw before. How did the zombie get up here? Turning around I see him stalk closer to me and I decide to just ask, “How did you get up here?”
When he doesn’t respond I point down at the lower level and look at him and point at him while asking, “How did you get up here?” The zombie stops beside me looking down and then at me. Excitement floods through me at that little movement, that acknowledgement and then dread sucks it all say. There’s a chance he could understand me.
I don’t say anything else to it and stare into his milky white eyes. The eyes of a zombie my brain tells me. RUN. But I don't. I remain still until the zombie starts to hunch over me and begin to whimper. Relief floods through me for some reason and I ignore it and the zombie to walk back over to the couch. I sit down and plan my escape for when he leaves and pray he doesn’t attack my team heading towards here. Please just be a stupid zombie.
That said the stupid zombie follows me whimpering somehow putting me at ease. I can’t fall asleep today or tonight and I need to escape soon. If the zombie doesn’t leave I will have to make a jump for it. If I angle myself just right I can stick to the window or fall to my death or crash through a window in a room filled with zombies who would eat me. I shake out those last two thoughts and try to relax.
Hours pass by and my eyelids begin to feel heavy. I fight sleep off with all my energy and ignore my stomach as it growls. Hunger is at least keeping me awake for now but I wish I could sleep it off like I have done countless times before. I watch from the couch through the broken window as the sun begins to set and my eyes become heavier and harder to fight to keep them open. I turn on the lanturne so I can have some light and wait for the zombie to leave. Please leave, please.
I jerk awake and look around. Day time is just dusting the sky or is that dusk? I don’t dwell on it and instead look around for the zombie to only find an empty room. Yes. I run to the balcony and look down, some zombies are tumbling down there that weren’t there before. Seeing them sets my heart on fire. What if they jump on here like the other one but none do and none look up. I sigh with relief and turn quickly to the broken window. I have my sword strapped to my pack and start to trap in my suction cups when I hear the zombies below all move at once.
Panic sets and I drop off the edge cutting my hand on some of the broken glass. I don’t react to the pain that sets in and start to suction cup my way down. When I am about a floor down the zombie’s head appears out of the broken window that I escaped out of. A loud growl escapes his lips as a sneer envelopes it. I begin to hurry down with my heart beating in my throat, not making this process any easier.
Glancing back up I notice the zombie is gone and the logical side of my brain says he won’t jump down to get me but the other part of my brain says he will it’s a zombie they are all stupid, but not this one not my zombie. I stop for a moment a few floors down and take a few deep breaths. My hand stings from the cut but I ignore it and push on. By the time I have reached the lower level of the building hours have passed and the sun is now high in the sky below a mass of zombies have gathered.
A tear of frustration slips my eye as I look down to see them. I search for my zombie and luckily I don’t see him so I pause and rest. My muscles ache from the climb, nothing I haven’t felt before but mixed with this exhalation I feel defunct. I can do this, I CAN do this. I tell myself as I work the last few floors and then un-suction onto an overhang.
I was expecting my feet to hit the metal but over the years the metal grew weak and rusted and I fall right through.
