Chapter Three : The Awakening

846 Words
Something was wrong. Seraphina knew it the moment she stepped away from the Moon Tree. Her body felt unfamiliar. Her heartbeat was too fast, her skin was burning, and something deep inside her was pushing against the walls she had always kept around herself. She couldn't understand it. She couldn't control it. "Seraphina?" Her mother's voice reached her. She turned toward Elara, but before she could answer, another wave rushed through her. Seraphina gasped. Her knees nearly gave out. Cassian immediately moved toward her. "Seraphina!" "I'm fine." The words came out too quickly. She wasn't fine. She could feel something gathering inside her. Something powerful. Something that wanted out. Her wolf was no longer calm. It was awake. Fully awake. And it was frightened. "Get back," Seraphina whispered. Cassian stopped. "What?" "Everyone, move away from me." Elara stepped closer instead. "You're not alone. Whatever is happening, we'll handle it together." Seraphina shook her head. "No." Another pulse of power moved through her body. The ground beneath her feet cracked. Several wolves nearby stumbled backward. A few gasped. Seraphina stared at the ground in horror. "I told you." Her voice trembled. "I don't know what I'm doing." Cassian looked at his daughter. "We're not leaving you." "I could hurt you." "You won't." "You don't know that!" The sudden force in her voice silenced him. Seraphina's breathing became heavier. She could feel the power spreading farther. The trees around the clearing trembled. The air itself seemed to respond to her emotions. Fear. Confusion. Panic. All of it was feeding whatever was awakening inside her. "I need to get away." Elara reached for her hand. "Seraphina, wait." "I'm sorry." She pulled away. Then she ran. "Seraphina!" Her family immediately moved after her. But before they could follow, Alaric's voice stopped them. "Don't." Cassian turned sharply. "Grandfather?" Alaric stood beneath the Moon Tree, his expression unusually serious. "She needs to go." Elara stared at him. "She's losing control." "I know." "Then why are we letting her run?" Evelina stepped beside her husband. "Because chasing her won't help." Cassian looked toward the forest where Seraphina had disappeared. "She's our daughter." "And she needs to face this herself." His jaw tightened. "What if she gets hurt?" Alaric's gaze softened. "Then we will be there when she returns." Evelina placed a hand on Elara's shoulder. "Trust her." The family stood silently. They could still feel the strange energy moving through the forest. But none of them followed. For the first time in Seraphina's life, her family had to let her face something alone. Not because they loved her any less. Because they trusted her enough to believe she could survive it. --- Seraphina ran deeper into the forest. She didn't know where she was going. She only knew she needed distance. The farther she went, the quieter the pack became. The trees grew thicker. The sounds of the ceremony disappeared behind her. Finally, she reached a secluded clearing near the edge of the territory. It was far enough from the pack. Far enough from her family. Far enough that if she lost control... No one would be hurt. Seraphina stumbled into the clearing and fell to her knees. Her hands pressed against the ground. "Please..." Her breathing shook. "Just stop." But it didn't stop. The power inside her surged again. Silver light spread beneath her palms. The trees around her bent away from the force. Seraphina cried out. She wanted to release it. She wanted to let it all out. But every instinct inside her screamed that she couldn't. Not here. Not near her family. Not near her pack. She closed her eyes. "I'm scared." For the first time that night, she admitted it aloud. "I'm scared of myself." Her wolf answered with a low, trembling growl. Then the power burst free. --- Back near the ceremony grounds, three men stood completely still. Azael, Kaelen, and Rhydian had watched Seraphina run. They had barely spoken since seeing her. Rhydian took a step forward. "She's leaving." Kaelen's eyes followed the direction she had taken. "I can see that." "We should go after her." Kaelen's jaw tightened. "She's frightened." "Exactly." Azael finally spoke. "Don't chase her." The other two looked at him. Rhydian frowned. "She's our mate." Azael's eyes remained fixed on the forest. "And she's running because she doesn't want to hurt anyone." Kaelen's expression hardened. "I don't like this." "Neither do I." Rhydian clenched his fists. "Then why are we standing here?" Azael looked toward the forest. "Because if we frighten her further, she'll run farther." That silenced them. Then a powerful wave of energy passed through the forest. All three wolves reacted. Rhydian's eyes changed. "She's releasing it." Kaelen immediately stepped forward. "We're going." This time, Azael didn't stop him. They moved through the forest together. Not to force her back. Not to corner her. But to make sure no one else came near her. They didn't know what was happening to their mate. But none of them could ignore the instinct screaming inside them. Find her. Protect her. Keep her safe.
