Chapter Twenty-Six:

1105 Words

"Drive faster, Julian." My voice cracks through the car before I can stop it. Julian does not answer. He just tightens both hands on the wheel and pushes the car harder down the dark road. The first pale line of dawn is already pressing against the sky. We are running out of night. Running out of time. Adrian sits in the back seat, leaning forward between us. "Take the next left," he says. "The main road curves too wide. There is a smaller path through the trees." Julian glances at him in the mirror. "You know the place well for a man who is only suddenly family." Adrian does not rise to it. "I know it because Evelyn showed me once. She said if anything ever went wrong, that house would be where the truth either survived or died." I stare out the window, but I am not seeing the road.
