Chapter Three
Walking back to class with Noah felt unreal. People stared, whispering as we passed, and for once it was not because of me alone. Their eyes shifted between us like they were trying to solve a puzzle. I kept my gaze forward, pretending not to notice, but inside I was tense. Noah didn’t seem bothered. He walked with an easy confidence, hands in his pockets, like the hallway belonged to him.
When we reached the class door, I hesitated. I could already hear the giggles and the fake coughs from inside. Noah looked at me. You don’t have to be scared. They can’t bite.
I almost smiled. Almost. I took a breath and walked in. The room went quiet the moment Noah followed behind me. I tried to slip into my usual seat in the corner, but he surprised me. He sat right next to me, as if it was the most natural thing to do. The class erupted with murmurs.
Why is he sitting with her?
Does he know who she is?
It spread like wildfire, but Noah acted like he heard nothing. He pulled out his notebook and leaned toward me slightly. Don’t worry. Let them talk. Give them something to choke on.
I stared at him, shocked by his boldness. I did not understand him. Why me? Why this attention? People like him didn’t hang out with people like me. It wasn’t how high school worked. But he didn’t look like someone who cared about rules.
The teacher entered and started the class, but I could barely focus. I kept replaying the morning in my head. The fall. The laughter. The running. Then Noah appearing out of nowhere like a calm break in a storm. My heartbeat refused to settle.
Halfway through the lesson, a note slid onto my desk. It was from the back row, where the bullies sat. I already knew it wouldn’t be good. My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Stay away from him. We know what you are trying to do.
My chest tightened. I folded the paper quickly and pressed it under my book. Noah noticed my sudden stillness. He leaned closer.
You good? he whispered.
I nodded too quickly. Yes.
He didn’t believe me, but he didn’t push. He just shifted slightly, angling his body in a way that made me feel strangely protected.
I stared at the board, pretending to pay attention, but my mind drifted to something deeper. Something forming quietly inside me since this morning. I didn’t know what Noah wanted or what his intentions were. But I had a feeling he would bring a change I wasn’t prepared for.
A change that would shape everything that came next.
