The Girl Who would not Break

Chapter Twelve: The Girl Who Would Not Break Ashley didn’t sleep that night. Her anger wasn’t the kind that burned out quickly. It was sharp, clean, focused. The kind of anger that grew from being pushed too many times and finally deciding enough was enough. By morning, she had one goal. Find the truth. She grabbed her laptop and sat cross-legged on her bed. The picture Amanda sent had been forwarded from an unknown number, but Ashley wasn’t stupid. She uploaded the image into a tracker, traced its metadata, checked the routing history, and ran an IP trace. Her hands trembled only once. When the final location popped up on her screen, she froze. The IP address was from Amanda’s house. Amanda’s device. Amanda’s network. Her suspicion wasn’t just confirmed. It was carved into stone. Ashley shut her laptop slowly. She didn’t feel like crying. She felt like fighting. She got dressed carefully, choosing a look that matched her new courage. Black jeans that hugged her legs, a fitted top that showed her new confidence, and the tiny gold necklace Noah once said looked beautiful on her. She tied her hair in a sleek ponytail, looked in the mirror, and saw a version of herself that didn’t bow anymore. Her phone vibrated. A message from Noah. “Can we talk today” She ignored it for now. She needed to confront him in person, not through text. When she walked into school, heads turned immediately. They always did now. But this time, she didn’t care who stared. She moved through the hallway like someone who knew her own power. Then she saw Noah by his locker. He looked exhausted, worried, frustrated. When his eyes landed on her, he stepped forward instantly. “Ashley, wait. Please.” She stopped right in front of him. “We need to talk.” He swallowed hard. “I know, I know you saw the picture. But it’s not what you think. I swear.” She looked into his eyes, steady and straight. “Did you kiss her.” Noah looked horrified. “No. Ashley, I would never. I don’t even want her anywhere near me.” “Then explain the picture.” “It’s fake,” he said sharply. “Or edited. Or she tricked it somehow. I don’t know. But I promise you I didn’t kiss her.” Ashley stared at him silently. Noah ran a hand through his hair, agitated. “Ashley, I don’t even know how that photo exists. Amanda told my mom she was helping me with homework last night. She lied about everything.” “I traced it,” Ashley said calmly. He blinked. “What?” “I traced the IP. It came from your house.” Noah’s jaw tightened. “Ashley, she used my phone. She knows my password. She’s been reading my messages. She probably staged the whole thing.” Ashley’s heart dropped. Not from pain this time. From realization. “Amanda wants to break us up,” she whispered. “She wants everything you have,” Noah said quietly. “Including me.” A strange heat filled Ashley’s chest. Not jealousy. Not insecurity. Determination. She stepped closer. Noah looked at her, confused but hopeful. Before he could say another word, she grabbed his shirt and pulled him into a kiss. A full, unashamed, hallway-stopping kiss. Students gasped. A group whispered loudly. Phones came out. Someone dropped their books. Noah froze for half a second, then kissed her back with relief and hunger. His hands went to her waist, pulling her closer. The kiss wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t shy. It was a message. They pulled apart slowly. Noah looked breathless and stunned. “Ashley…” “That’s how I feel,” she said quietly. “Not what Amanda wants.” Noah smiled, something warm and grateful in his eyes. “I missed you.” She pressed her forehead against his. “I’m not going anywhere.” A loud gasp echoed behind them. Amanda stood at the end of the hallway, her face red, her hands shaking with fury. She glared at them like she wanted to burn the whole school down. Ashley didn’t flinch. Amanda stormed forward. “Noah, what are you doing kissing her in front of everyone like that?” Noah didn’t move an inch. “I can kiss whoever I want.” Students gathered instantly. A crowd circled them. Whispering. Filming. Waiting. Amanda stepped up to Ashley. “You think you won? You think this changes anything?” Ashley looked her dead in the eye. “I know what you did. The fake message. The fake picture. The manipulation.” Amanda’s eyes narrowed. For a moment, she looked genuinely scared. Then she masked it with a scoff. “You can’t prove anything.” Ashley smiled slightly. “I don’t have to. I traced the IP.” A murmur rippled through the crowd. Amanda blinked fast, losing her confidence. “You’re lying.” “No,” Ashley said, stepping closer, “you are.” The hallway went quiet. Amanda pushed her shoulder. “You think you’re better than me just because you had eye surgery? You think being pretty now makes you important?” Ashley didn’t move. Didn’t blink. “No. What makes me important is that I’m not scared of you anymore.” Amanda’s breathing grew louder, faster. Her face turned red. “You don’t belong here. Noah doesn’t want you. He’s always wanted—” Ashley snapped. She slapped Amanda across the face. It wasn’t weak or hesitant. It was sharp, loud, and clean. The sound echoed across the hallway. Students screamed. Someone shouted “Oh my God!” Another yelled “Record this!” Amanda froze, eyes wide, hand on her cheek. For the first time in her life, Ashley felt powerful. Liberated. It was like releasing years of fear in one single strike. Amanda shook, voice cracking. “You… you hit me.” Ashley stepped closer. “That’s the last time you humiliate me.” Amanda backed up, confused and trembling. The crowd parted for her as she hurried away, hiding her face. Noah looked at Ashley like she was something blazing with light. “I can’t believe you did that.” Ashley turned to him slowly. “She pushed me too far.” He touched her cheek gently. “Are you okay?” She nodded once. “Better than ever.” They stood close, breathing in the same small space, the world around them erupting in gossip and chaos. But for that moment, Ashley didn’t care. This time, she wasn’t the girl everyone whispered about. She was the girl they feared. And the girl Noah couldn’t stop looking at. .
