The Burn of Want

Chapter Eleven: The Burn of Want Ashley never thought desire could feel like gravity pulling her toward someone, but with Noah it was exactly that. Ever since she returned after her surgery, hotter, stronger, and fearless, every moment between them seemed loaded like a secret waiting to explode. The tension wasn’t imagined either. It lived between them like a spark that refused to die. But tonight, that spark burned. It started after the last bell when Noah offered to walk her home. She should have said no or at least pretended she had somewhere to be. But she accepted, mostly because the new Ashley didn’t hide from anyone, and partly because Noah’s green eyes made her forget how to think. They walked side by side, their shoulders almost touching. The air felt warm and humid, thick enough to swallow her voice. Noah kept stealing glances at her like he was trying to memorize her face. Ashley tried not to look back but found herself staring at him every time his attention slipped away from her. His jawline looked like it was carved in perfect lines and the sunset made a soft shadow fall across his cheekbones. He was a walking life ruiner and he didn’t even hide it. “I missed you,” he said quietly. She froze. “You saw me every day at school.” “That’s not the same.” His voice tightened. “I missed you before. During the three months. It felt like the world paused until you came back.” Her heart jumped. She didn’t know whether to breathe or run. When they reached the small abandoned park near her street, Noah paused. “Can we stay here a little? I want to talk to you but I don’t think I’ll get the words right if we keep walking.” Ashley sat on the old wooden bench. Noah sat beside her but faced her directly, his knee touching hers. Her breath caught as he leaned closer. “You’re different now,” he said. “Stronger, beautiful like fire and I don’t even think you realise how much I want you.” She swallowed. “Noah…” He shook his head slowly. “I’m not being dramatic. Every time I look at you, I feel like I’m losing control of myself.” He paused, eyes fixed on her. “I don’t want to lose you again.” The silence that followed wasn’t empty. It felt charged, full, waiting. Ashley whispered, “You won’t lose me.” Before she could say anything else, Noah cupped her cheek with his warm hand. His thumb brushed her skin, soft, slow, teasing in a way that made her chest tighten. She leaned into his touch without thinking. “Can I kiss you?” he asked softly. She nodded. He didn’t hesitate. Their lips met in a slow, burning kiss that tasted like longing and electricity. The moment his mouth touched hers, Ashley felt her whole body come alive. Noah tilted her chin gently and deepened the kiss. His hand slid to the back of her neck, pulling her closer. Her fingers tangled in his shirt, gripping it as though it could hold her steady. The kiss became hotter, more urgent, like the first one wasn’t enough. Noah shifted closer, pressing against her. She felt the warmth of his body, the intensity in the way he breathed against her lips. Every nerve in her body lit up. “Ashley,” he whispered between kisses, voice shaking. “I want you so much.” His lips moved along her jaw, then her neck. Her breath hitched and she leaned into him without meaning to. It felt wrong and right at the same time, like something forbidden she had waited years to feel. Noah kissed her again, deeper, and Ashley let herself fall into it. His hands rested at her waist, warm and steady. She moved closer until she was practically sitting in his lap. It was the kind of moment that could have gone further, the kind of heat that didn’t know how to stop. Their breaths tangled, their bodies pressed, their minds gone. “Noah,” she whispered breathlessly. “Maybe we should slow down.” “We can,” he said, kissing her again with a gentler softness that made her melt. “I’ll stop whenever you want. I’m not rushing you.” But the honesty in his voice made her want to kiss him again. She did. And the kiss didn’t stop. It grew hotter. His hand slid under the hem of her shirt, touching her waist lightly like she was something fragile and precious at the same time. Ashley’s body trembled. “Noah…” She gasped again, unsure if she wanted to end it or continue. That was when the sound came. A soft click. A phone camera. They both jerked away instantly. Ashley turned her head sharply and saw Amanda standing behind a tree, her glossy hair falling in perfect waves, her lips curved into a small wicked smirk. She held her phone up like a trophy. “What are you doing?” Ashley snapped. Amanda tilted her head innocently. “Just passing by.” Noah stood up immediately. “Amanda, that’s not funny. Delete whatever you recorded.” Amanda’s smile only widened. “Relax, big brother. You always get so protective.” Ashley felt her entire body go cold. She saw the look on Amanda’s face, the calculation, the way she watched Noah like a possession she didn’t want to share. Something inside Ashley clicked. This wasn’t an accident. This was a move. Amanda turned to leave, swinging her phone playfully. “See you at home, Noah.” Noah looked sick. “I’m so sorry. She’s… She’s not supposed to be here.” Ashley forced a breath into her lungs. “Forget her. Just go home and talk to her. Make her delete it.” “I will.” He stepped forward and grabbed her hand. “Ashley, I’m not letting anything ruin this. I swear.” She nodded slowly. “Okay.” He kissed her forehead and walked away quickly. Ashley sat down again, her heart pounding. The warmth from their moment was still on her lips, her skin, her heartbeat. But now it felt mixed with something sharp and dangerous. Amanda wasn’t done. Ashley sensed it. She got home later that evening and started unpacking her books when her phone buzzed. A message. From Noah. At least she thought it was Noah. The contact name was him. The message was one sentence. “I shouldn’t have kissed you. I was confused.” Her entire chest collapsed. Before she could type anything, a second message arrived. “Don’t text me anymore.” Ashley’s breath caught painfully. She felt her throat tighten and her fingers freeze. This wasn’t Noah. She felt it instantly. The tone was wrong. The words were wrong. The abruptness was wrong. She texted back. “Noah what are you talking about” The reply came immediately. “I like someone else. Please stop embarrassing yourself.” Ashley’s heart felt like it shattered in her hands. She blinked fast, refusing to cry. She typed again but her hand shook. “Who are you talking about” This time, the reply didn’t come through text. It came as a photo. A photo of Noah kissing Amanda. Ashley stared at it, numb. Her world cracked open. She typed one last message. “Did you kiss her” Noah’s contact replied. “Yes.” Ashley dropped her phone. A deep ache filled her chest, cold and sharp. But after a moment, something stronger rose inside her. This wasn’t Noah. She knew it. She felt it. This was manipulation. This was Amanda. She wiped her eyes, stood up straight and promised herself one thing. She was not the same girl who used to be scared. This time she would fight back. And Amanda had no idea what she had just started.
