CHAPTER 3 BROKEN

1530 Words
BROKEN As the night veil gradually lifted, the dawn of a new day unveiled a masterpiece of dawn. The horizon is painted in hues of soft pastels, a delicate blend of apricot and lavender that announces the arrival of the sun. Amid the incident that had occurred, there was no space for privacy or for the crime to be kept confidential. The news of the deaths had spread all over Evermere City; words were already on the streets, television, and radio, and people were talking and speculating about them at their workplaces. Even in my school, the city was in grief and fear, but it was nothing new to them because a series of events similar to this had been frequent in the past in Evermere. Dates back to 15 years ago, when the last time a crime like this was committed, This was the period when wolves lived among humans; the city seemed to hold a lot of dark secrets and had a deadly past. It was nothing to older residents of the city. The school today was rowdy, the students quiet as they sat in pairs and were shocked at the news spreading like wildfire everywhere in the city, gossiping, and to know it was me, the new girl in school, that her family was killed. It sparked a creepy feeling in them; to think that the police had no trace that I was the killer was the one thing that made me skeptical. Mr. Spencer walked into the classroom and addressed the students, "Listen, everyone, we all know what has happened in the city; this is not a time to panic or gossip. Stay calm! and go home once school's over for the day." As he was done, the school bell rang, and the principal turned on the speakers in the school and asked the students to go home. "Please, students of Evermere High, go home; I repeat, go home," and they evacuated the school building. "What killed her family?" Student 1 blurted. "I heard it was a suicide case, but then it's suspicious; according to the news on television today, Mae's mom's heart was ripped out." student 2 said as they left the school. "Oh my goodness, that's scary," Student 3 responded. "Yeah, it is," student 1 assured. In the hospital, I laid on the bed; my pulse and heartbeat were high, and the medical equipment made an emergency sound, which got the attention of the nurses and the doctor in charge. They rushed in and attended to me. I was breathing, but I wasn't awake. My pulse and heartbeat dropped, and then I opened my eyes. They stared at me, and I fell back into a deep sleep that lasted for a week, which got them worried. "She has been asleep for a week now, but her pulses and heart rate are okay," the nurse said to the doctor. "Okay, please check her often," the doctor demanded. "Yes, sir," she responded. And they both left the room. I was alone in the room. In my deep sleep, I heard his voice. He spoke happily to me, "Well done, Mae; you sure are going to make a great werewolf." On hearing the part where he mentioned a great werewolf, I woke up anxious, my heart racing,as there was no one in the hospital room I was in. I removed the drip from my hands, took off the bonnet on my hair, and sneaked out of the hospital. On my way, I had a vivid flashback to the deaths of my family. I sobbed, "Oh, what have I done? Who am I?" I cried bitterly, and I couldn't forgive myself for such a thing. The voice said that I'm a werewolf. I immediately heard his voice, and he said to me, "Yes, you are a werewolf," and I screamed, "Go away, leave me the hell alone; you are not real!" I covered my ears, turned around, ran into the woods, and traced my way back to my house. I entered the house regardless of the restriction sign. I went to Mom's room, and I cried heavily as I took a picture of her hung on the wall. I used my hands to pat her face, and it was just too painful knowing that I killed her. I felt an acute silence as I lay on the floor and nodded off. The tree leaves rumbled, thunder sparkled, the weather changed, and it rained lightly. At the hospital, the nurses and the doctor were extremely busy to notice my absence; new cases of injury and deaths were being recorded, and it seemed as if a war was going on in Evermere City at the moment. I never experienced this when we had not moved here. How come I'm a werewolf? The voice said Mom never mentioned anything like that. It freaks me out. I believe it all has to do with this place. It was a new day, a sunny and serene afternoon, when the voice woke me up. "Wake up, werewolf girl, still sleeping when you are meant to kill.". I stood up, stretched my body, stared at myself in the mirror, and checked my hands and my teeth. My claws were out and my teeth were sharp. "So it's true I'm a werewolf; what are these claws? My teeth are different," I said as I touched my teeth with my hands and my claws pierced my cheek. I forgot for a moment that the claws were out. It was painful. Then suddenly I heard the police car siren wailing from close proximity to the house. They arrived at the house, the scene of the crime, and I quickly hid, but the voice definitely knew how to get me in trouble. It made me experience an acute sound that boiled inside my head so much that I couldn't endure the pain. I used my fist to wage myself on the mirror as I was close to it, and it fell to the floor and broke into pieces, which got the attention of the policemen. I squeezed my face in dissatisfaction as I secretly ran out of the house while they climbed the staircase. "Hello! Who's there??"The first policeman said this as he pointed his gun and tiptoed. They checked everywhere, and the second policeman said to the other one, "All clear, there is no one here." They headed back to the crime scene and looked at every little detail to get evidence. "What do you think did this?" one of the policemen said as they had a conversation between themselves. "I can't tell; this is unbelievable; the woman's heart was ripped out, and the little girl's neck was broken. I mean, who could have done this?" "I believe this is outrageous.". They exhaled in disgust. They took blood and hair samples, locked up the building, and drove back to the station. At the station, the samples were handed over to Officer Marcus, a tall, dark-skinned man with a mustache and black short hair who is one of the officers in charge of the crime investigation section in the Evermere police unit. "Keep this confidential; open a file for this case," said the senior policeman. "Yes, sir," Officer Marcus responded. He took the samples and did as he was ordered. At the hospital, Mom and Imogen were taken to the cemetery to be buried. They put them in a coffin, and I was able to trace the van till they arrived at the place. They dug the graves, respectively, and buried them. It was indeed a mournful sin I had committed to my blood. After everyone left the graveyard, I went to their grave. I fell on my knees and cried heavily. "Mom, I'm sorry. Imogen, I'm sorry... What have I done? I don't know if I'm ever going to forgive myself for this; I'm broken." I sobbed. The pain was too much to bear; it was like a stake pierced into my heart. I did not want to be alive anymore. I was just alone. I stayed down there for some time before I left because I couldn't spend my night in a graveyard, but I sure would have loved to. Heaven knows I missed my family, but this was my misfortune that I am a werewolf and no one knew. I guess this was my secret to keep. I traced my way back home, and I spent my night there. The next day, which happened to be cloudy, as raindrops tapped gently on the window pane at the hospital, orchestrating a melody as they poured, each raindrop a crystal bead slid down leaves and petals, leaving a glistening trail in its wake. At the hospital, when the nurse came to check on me, she found out that I was no longer there. She checked in the restroom and within the hospital's premises before raising an alarm. "I don't know. The girl is gone!" Nurse 1 blurted The doctor walked in and saw that I was gone, and he sighed in disbelief. "How! When! Where? Look for her everywhere; she's meant to be resting," the doctor said worriedly.
