CHAPTER 4 FOSTERED

1500 Words
"We've searched every damn place in this hospital, and she isn't here," the nurse reported back to the doctor. "Let's check the security camera," said the doctor". "Okay". The nurse replied that they took the elevator and went up to the security room, where they met the security man. "I want to see footage from last night's room 206," the doctor demanded, and the security guy scrolled down on the computer system and clicked on the footage, which showed when I left the hospital, and that was the only clip of me that was caught on camera. "Oh damn it, she left, but why?" the doctor mumbled. "Put me on a call with the police!" He ordered, and the security guy did. "Hello, officer, this is Doctor Mark on the phone." "Okay, what's the issue? I'm with you." "The little girl Mae that was brought into the hospital a week ago is no longer at the hospital; we've got footage of her when she left.". "Oh damn it," Officer Marcus said as he hit his fist on his table. "Okay, we'll handle the issue from here," he assured. "Alright, officer, the doctor replied as he went back to attend to other patients. At the station, the police officer Marcus informed the other policemen that they had a missing case of mine. They went through their files and equipment, ran outside, entered the car, and drove down to my house, and fortunately for me, I wasn't at home. I had gone out to get something to eat. On their arrival at the house, they searched every corner without leaving any place behind, but still, they could not find me. They hastily left the house and drove down to the hospital, consulted a search, and asked to see the footage of me when I left. After seeing the clip, they declared me missing. "Where do we find her? She doesn't use a phone; there is no access to trace her," Doctor Mark asked. "It's good as we declared her missing; this is the only option we have, and it comes with a price; in no time she will be found," Officer Marcus assured. Unfortunately for me, after I was declared missing, I was outside in a restaurant having some dessert. When I noticed on the television in the restaurant, I saw a picture of me, and the news said that I was missing from the hospital as of yesterday's night. "This 20-year-old girl, Mae Harper, has been recently reported missing as of 8:45 p.m. yesterday, and this is footage of her when she left the hospital. There will be a cash reward of $100,000 for whoever finds her and informs the police. Thank you." As soon as I watched that, anger boiled up in my body. I quickly hid my face and left the food I was eating. I ran out of the restaurant and headed back home. I tried to avoid as many faces as I could, and it was a success. I was back at my house, but I was frustrated at the moment. "Why should I be declared missing? I mean, I just left the hospital. I didn't do anything wrong. I mean, yes, I'm not under arrest." I said to myself,. I couldn't just believe that I was all over the town and that I was wanted, and it's just hard for me because a lot has happened lately so easily and fast. I decided to stay in my house. That night, it was as if I had a heart attack. I slept depressed and felt numb and empty. Then I heard a knock on my door, which shocked me, and I wondered who it could be. I went downstairs carefully to check, but I found no one there. I went back up, and the knocking on the door continued. I sighed and went down to check, and I found no one still. I never knew that there was a hefty, bald, dark-skinned man who secretly followed me home, and he was just making sure that I was the person that was declared missing. With that reward attached to it, I wasn't expecting less. Then I heard the voice; it had been a while. "I can help you; you can kill him and kill them all," the voice said sneakily. "The last person I'd want to receive any help from is you. Go away! You liar," I taunted. "No, you need me; I helped you; I showed you who you truly are... All these years, you have been kept in the dark. You have always wanted to be alone; I helped you achieve that, and what do I get in return?" He asked. I got overwhelmed; he seemed to know a lot. "No, you've ruined my life! Leave me alone, you monster!" "I will show you who a monster is." He coerced me to kill that man outside, and I did. I grabbed his heart out, but too bad he already informed the police about my location. I carried his body into the woods and buried it. I came back home and cleaned up the blood. Then I got myself, and I sobbed. "What have you done to me, you monster?" I shook in fear. I indeed felt like the monster I called him. "Ha ha ha... who is the real monster, you or me? You killed your only family; you are the monster.. The voice taunted me till I passed out. I woke up the next morning on an emergency stretcher in the hospital. I jerked up and screamed, "No! I don't want to be here, I cried out loudly, getting the attention of everyone inside the hospital at the moment. The nurses held me down tightly so I couldn't escape. There was this beautiful white woman who looked like she was in her late 30s. She had long brown hair and blue eyes. She stared right into my eyes, and it looked like she was about to cry as they rolled me down to room 206. I saw this lady in the opposite room from the wall since the walls were made of half wood and half glass. She held a girl who might be just the same age as me. I could see her on the hospital bed, then the woman fell to the floor, and there was a tall man who was probably in his late 40s who tried to console her. It seemed the girl on the bed was dead, and it happened to be their daughter. I kept on staring to know exactly what was going on. The doctor, Mark, came in. He was sad. He put his hand in his pocket and brought it out again. "Riley, I'm deeply sorry for your loss. We tried all that we could do to save her, but she didn't make it." He said "Oh, no doctor, this can't be true," the woman responded. She looked pitiful, and I forgot for a moment all that had happened in my life because I felt her pain. Oh, her name was Riley, and her husband's was Spencer. It was a sad moment for the family. By their side was a cute brown-skinned 7-year-old little boy standing at the corner who witnessed the whole thing. Mrs.Riley noticed that I stared at her the whole time, and then she whispered to her husband. "She looks like our baby, I mean her eyes and her nose," she said, using her right hand to touch her eyes and nose. Meanwhile, Mr. Spencer was quiet and tried to comfort her. "It's okay, honey, we're going to be fine," he sadly patted her back, but she went on to ask Dr. Mark. "Why is she here?" she pointed at me. "She lost her family, to be specific, her mother and sister; how they died is still unknown. The woman's heart was ripped out, and the little girl was strangled to death." "Jesus!" "We found her on the floor; we thought she was dead, but she survived." From their conversation, I knew that everyone had no idea that I was the killer, but rather that they thought I was a survivor. "What's she doing here? Oh, poor thing," Mrs.Riley said. "She's under our care; we don't know who might be after her, but at least for now, she's under our care.". The woman turned to her husband and compassionately said, "I want her," he told his wife, leading her to a corner. "Honey I know we just lost Jane, but don't you think what you want is too much at the moment? "No, sweetheart, I mean it; we can raise her like our own; if she's left here, she will be taken to foster care; there's just something about her." "I don't know if I want this." "Honey, please, I want this for us, for Leon." "Okay, it's fine." They went ahead to meet the doctor. "We want her; we've decided to adopt her.".
