As she entered the barn, Miss Janet Pannett mused on how tempting it was to raise the means above the ends—letting the steps become more important than the journey, or the blueprints rank higher than the building. It was a pattern she had seen on several worlds. The people of Earth had it down to a fine art, but for sheer determination at elevating procedure above outcome, there was no beating her fellow Iapetans.
