EPISODE20:- THE WEIGHT OF HEARTS

761 Words
The evening at Silver Heights Hotel was unusually quiet. The golden lights reflected off polished floors, and the sound of distant jazz hummed from the lobby speakers. Leo finished his final room check, but his mind wasn’t on the work. He hadn’t seen Clara since their argument earlier that day, and the memory of her hurt expression kept replaying in his mind. He walked to the staff lounge, hoping to find her. “Have you seen Clara?” he asked a housekeeper folding linens. “She took a leave,” the woman said. “Said she needed a break. Left a note for management. Didn’t say when she’d return.” Leo nodded, hiding his disappointment. He understood — sometimes the kindest people needed distance from the things that hurt them. But knowing he’d been the reason still stung. He stood alone in the quiet hallway, guilt pressing heavily on his chest. Just then, his phone buzzed. Layla Beaumont. Can you come over tonight? I really need someone to talk to. He stared at the screen for a long moment before replying. On my way. The Beaumont residence glowed like a beacon on the hill, framed by gardens and fountains that shimmered in moonlight. Layla met him at the door herself, barefoot in a simple white dress, her hair loose. For once, she didn’t look like the polished heiress the world saw. She looked like someone searching for peace. “Come in,” she said softly. They settled in the quiet lounge, the flicker of the fireplace casting amber light on their faces. For a long while, she said nothing. Then, in a shaky voice, she began. “Ever since the Blackwood thing, everyone treats me differently,” she said. “Some people admire me, others envy me. But no one sees me as just… Layla.” Leo listened silently, his gaze steady. “My friends act cautious, my father watches every move I make. I feel like a headline, not a person. And then there’s you…” Her voice softened. “You talk to me like I’m normal. Like I can breathe again.” He smiled faintly. “That’s because you are normal, Layla. The world just refuses to believe it.” Her eyes met his. “You defended me today… in front of her. No one’s ever done that before.” “Anyone would have,” he said quietly. She shook her head. “Not anyone. You.” Her hand trembled slightly as she reached for his. “Leo, I don’t want to pretend anymore. I like you. I’ve never felt safer or more real with anyone.” He froze as her words hung in the air. Then, without thinking, she leaned forward and kissed him—softly, gently, like a confession that had waited too long. When she pulled back, her eyes searched his face. “Please… be my boyfriend.” He hesitated, every muscle caught between truth and restraint. “Layla,” he said finally, voice low. “I’m just a janitor. I work in a hotel, I earn enough to pay bills. I’m not the kind of man who can take you to fancy restaurants or buy you dresses that sparkle.” She smiled sadly. “I don’t need any of that. I just need you.” He shook his head slowly. “You deserve someone in your world — not someone struggling to stay afloat in his. I want to date a woman I can care for, protect, and provide for… not one who has to do that for me.” Layla’s lips parted, but no words came. Instead, she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around him. “I don’t care,” she whispered against his chest. “I just don’t care.” He held her gently, torn between reason and emotion. Outside, rain began to patter against the glass, soft and rhythmic. Minutes passed in silence until her breathing slowed, her head resting on his shoulder. She had fallen asleep, her fingers still loosely clutching his shirt as if afraid he might vanish. Leo looked down at her — the heiress who wanted nothing but honesty from a man who had everything to hide. He brushed a loose strand of hair from her face and whispered, “I wish things were different.” Then, with quiet care, he lifted her head, laid her gently against the couch cushion, and covered her with a soft blanket before stepping out into the rain — a man carrying both love and a secret too heavy to share.
